Hazel Hershewe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2024.
Hazel Winfred Hershewe, 94, passed away on October 26, 2024, in Rossmoor, CA. Born on January 12, 1930, Winnie was a cherished figure in her community and family. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, SK Hershewe, and a loving mother to Ronald, Jamil (Andrea), and Michael (Tara) Hershewe. Winnie was also a dear sister to Warren (Teresa), Donald (Elaine), Michael, Cheryl and Dana Hutson and a loving grandmother to Amberly, Hailey, Samuel, and Lucas. She loved her grandchildren immensely and they adored their "Nana."

Winnie was born in Ft. Worth, TX to Judge Spencer Hutson (Agnus) and Mary Frances Bogle. Although she lost her mother very young to illness, Winnie never let adversity get her down. She was determined to be independent and successful and see the world. She was the eldest of six children (Warren, Donald, Michael, Cheryl and Dana) and all remained close throughout their lifetimes.

Winnie's career began at the age of 16 when she joined Bell South in Dallas TX as a switchboard operator. Her tenure at The Bell's and AT&T spanned several decades and cities, including Dallas, New York City, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, where she made significant contributions and formed lasting relationships. She was proud to be one of the very first female managers for AT&T in the Los Angeles offices. She was truly a woman far ahead of her time. She was well loved, respected and cherished by all who knew her.

Winnie met the love of her life, SK Hershewe, in Dallas, TX. She was supportive and proud to be the wife of a professional writer, actor and producer, always hosting guests and other writers and creative colleagues to her home for home cooked meals, including her famous Sunday fried chicken and gravy dinners. Winnie and SK's Hollywood home on Gower Street was known for its open door to many colleagues, friends, and family. Winnie's home was always open to all, holidays, weekdays and weeknights included. Prior to their home in Hollywood where they raised their family, she and SK lived in NYC for several years before heading west. She enjoyed sharing stories of their time in NYC, where Ron was born, and their family life began. She lived her dream of adventure, travel and a strong sense of family. Winnie loved her entire family both immediate and extended and held a special place in her heart for Marilyn, Dennis and Noah.

Winnie was deeply involved in the arts and creative world. She was a passionate artist, known for her painting, drawing, and jewelry making. This creative spirit was a beloved aspect of her personality, bringing joy not only to her but also to those around her. In her later years, she had her art and creations on display and sold in a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, where she and SK had retired and lived in their well-loved cottage for many years, surrounded by family and friends, new and old. Winnie was always "dressed" in beautiful and colorful clothing, accessories, jewelry, makeup and her sparking hazel eyes. Her smile was infectious, along with her magical hazel eyes. She and SK achieved their dream of living in Carmel upon retirement thanks to Donald and Elaine.

Winnie was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church, where she participated in community and spiritual activities. Her faith was an important part of her life, providing her with comfort and a sense of community. Even during her final years, she always found comfort from visiting clergy from the Church.

Winnie's life was marked by her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, businesswoman and artist. She will be remembered for her loving nature, her creative spirit, and her unwavering support for her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love and creativity that will be cherished by all who knew her. We are certain she is happy to be reunited with SK and is soaring through heaven watching over her loved ones. We are forever grateful for her love and legacy. She will be missed.
