For this new year, my family is observing an "awful" anniversary. It is in loving memory that we are prompted to recall the loss of my sister HEIDRUN BALATONY RUSH (1944-2024) who passed away peacefully a year ago, on January 7th 2024. She had family and her favorite dog by her side in Nevada City, California. Although it was not her real name, all in the family and those who got to know her knew her as Heidi. She graduated in the Saint Anthony (Long Beach) Class of 1962, a truly impactful, trailblazing Saint. Heidi began a life journey that included residency and employment in a variety of places in Long Beach and all round the Pacific Coast, travel to her birthplace in Austria with our Mutti, our niece and nephew Monica and Andrew to spread ashes of our late sister Erika. Elsewhere in Europe and the USA she went eagerly with family houseboating, kayaking, skiing, and with her many hiking companions who were also her family. She held countless important jobs in socially responsible posts, and modeled a satisfying life as a good neighbor in every community in which she lived. And her work brought fun and enjoyment for her and the rest of us. As a widow in later years, Heidi lived among family and friends on a small farm in the Lake Tahoe foothills. We miss her sorely and we invite her friends and fellow Saints to join us in bearing the grief of Heidi´s passing but most of all in remembering a life so well lived. We have arranged for a tree to be planted in her honor, private memorial observances continue even now, daily, and other physical remembrances to her love and life are being planned for her last earthly community in Nevada City, CA.
Photos often tell more than the words we remember to say. So , we share some family snapshots of Heidi and ask others to continue to share photos and memories in this space. Keeping her memory alive, means a lot. Love and wishes for a good year.

I just learned of Heidi´s death and am so very saddened. As my dear sister-in-law she was the sister I never had. The tributes posted here by her immediate family members have me in tears. She was an amazing woman...adventurous, fun loving, generous and kind. I treasure the memories I have and will miss our chats and times together.

HEIDI FROM LONG BEACH

Everybody may have one friend like Heidi. For Those who don’t I really wish you could. Heidi was loveable and nowhere a stranger, not for very long. So, among the warmest memories I have of Heidi was when she accompanied her mutti on a first visit from California with her sister and me in Wisconsin. In a nearby town, she declined to join me in a 10,000 meter road race, but all of us stayed for a Gemutlichkeit Days celebration that town folk put on afterwards. Heidi somehow got to know almost everybody in the town where she arrived knowing only us. She took part in post-race games when even the locals shied away. In particular, Heidi won a kind of Beer Stein Relay race, where contestants ran a zig-zag race course grabbing pitchers from tables along the way. When they spilled beer, they had to backup to get a full pitcher. The winner’s name was called out on loudspeakers as they arrived with 2-3 beer pitchers in both hands. Coming from farthest away, Heidi was announced with fanfare as “Heidi from Long Beach.” Race watchers cheered and even people around town time called to her by name. It was heartwarming.
There are many, many warm Heidi stories that now pile on top of each other. They all make me smile even as I grieve with the rest of the family. My wife’s little sister. I will not remember Heidi as my sister-in-law although she was. I will remember her as my sister, the sister I never had. She was also the friend everybody should have. Fun, spunky, fearless, and faithful to all of us who knew and loved her. May her example and the memories of “Heidi from Long Beach” be a blessing forever.

I remember Heidi well-form the GV pickleball courts to kayaking a lake at moonrise and hikes in the foothills. She was always joyful and friendly. I had not seen her in a few years but she holds a special place in my memories. Rest in Peace Heidi.

Heidi had a great sense of humor and was always generous with what she had. I will add that she made the best chestnut stuffing one Thanksgiving that everyone raved about. Rest in Peace now Heidi
