Helen Gaye Capener Batis, 77, passed away peacefully in Ogden, Utah, on Sept. 17, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born in Salt Lake City on April 2, 1937, to Llewelluyn and Viola Gunn Capener.
Helen graduated from Gooding High School in 1955. She married Johnny Batis on Nov. 25, 1956, in Gooding, Idaho. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple on Nov. 21, 1964. She has lived in Malad and Twin Falls, Idaho, as well as Tremonton and Riverside, Utah.
She worked at U&I Sugar, managed the Bear's Den, Golden Bowl Drive-in, Crossroads, Maddox, and then retired from Thiokol in March of 2001. Helen achieved much in her life, including a superior performance award from Thiokol. Her biggest achievement is her seven children and numerous grandkids. She enjoyed sharing her beautiful blankets with everyone, sneaking dollar bills and fruit rollups into her grandchildren's hands, having monthly family home evenings, planning a big BINGO game for Christmas each year and camping with the family every year above Fairfield. She loved going to thrift stores and finding special gifts that would make someone smile. Helen loved trekking around the mountains of southern Utah and playing hand and foot with Johnny & her special friends in St. George. She always had a camera in hand to capture the special moments. Her family was her life.
Helen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, which included Primary president and teacher. She served a mission at the Bishop's Storehouse from September 2009 to March 2011 and served in the St. George Temple from 2004 to 2009.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Batis; seven children: Susan (Darwin) Burnett, John Steven (George Ann) Batis, Shelli (Randy) Atkinson, Sherri (Tom) Harper, Shawn (Angie) Batis, Shane (Tara) Batis, Stacy Vernieu; 28 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Richard Capener; sister, Pat (Reed) Dowdle; brother-in-law, Robert (LeAnne) Petroch; sister-in-law, Carmen (Frank) Kiska; brother-in-law, Robert (Trina) Fink and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother & father-in-laws, Vic & Pat Petroch, and Tomas Batis; two brothers, Gene and Jay Capener; three sisters-in-law, Theresa, Delora and Janice Capener; and one son-in-law, Buddie Lee Grover.
Funeral services for Helen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Belmont LDS Chapel (16925 N. 5200 West, Riverside) with a viewing prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. There will also be a viewing from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home (111 N. 100 East - Tremonton). Burial will follow the funeral at the Riverside Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the Belmont 2nd Ward, George E. Wahlen Veterans Home, Andrea Aston, the Coast Guard Wing Staff and Bristol Hospice Care.
Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.ruddfuneralhome.com.

Wade Thornock

September 19, 2014

To all of the Batis clan we express our love in this difficult time with the knowledge that this separation is a brief one but still a painful loss.

You all have always been such a great support to our family in our times of need (even during blizzards on Christmas Eve outside Tremonton). We think the world of your family and remember all of the great times we have spent with you and our "Aunt" Helen. She was also such an important part of my grandma and grandpa's life and I'm sure they are happy to finally be reunited.

Condolences from the Thornock family (Wade, Jessica. and Brendan)
