In Greek mythology, nectar was considered the food of the gods. If only they could have tasted Nana’s dressing, potato salad, stuffed cabbages, lasagna, eggs on toast, spaghetti, lima beans, gravy or cornbread, then they would have surely scrapped the nectar. Her meals were a direct extension of her heart and after eating one of her meals, you felt deeply loved. She truly enjoyed cooking for her family and her ingredients and methods were calculated and exact and not to be altered.
Oh the way she would gush about her grandchildren and great grandchildren! She would always remind everyone she encountered of how beautiful, intelligent, thoughtful and special her grandchildren were. If you had a rough patch at school or on the athletic field, spending a visit with Nana would leave you feeling loved and special enough to take on the next challenge.
Over the last several years, our conversations on the telephone were filled with stories of the past. At some point during our conversation, she would always make a reference to her late husband and my grandfather Joseph Graham. Although I already deeply miss Nana, I am comforted knowing that she is now once again reunited with the “most handsome man from Little Five Points” after 40 years of being separated.

I remember how friendly Joe's mother was when our elementary school class from Jerome Jones would walk to his home on Mead Street to see his pigeons. She was always so nice to us eveb though a group of ~20 kids had just dropped by. I remember her coming to visit our classes and being involved in our school. Joe and I attended school from kindergarten until we graduated from Roosevelt High School. I remember when the twins were born when we were near graduation from high school.
My husband, Steve, who also graduated in the same class from Roosevelt, and I wanted to express our condolences and also say how wonderful it is for your family to have had such a gracious lady and matriarch to have loved her family and been so involved with them for 90 years.
Sincerely,
Jill Barclay and Steve L Brown
