Helen Joyce Merchant passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at her residence in Tickfaw, Louisiana, at the age of 81. She was born on Saturday, March 30, 1935, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to the late Opal Ratcliff Heird and Richard Heird. Helen is survived by her three sons, Keith Richard Merchant, Scott Leo Merchant, and Raymond Joseph Merchant: her daughter-in-law, Lucrecia Merchant; and her grandchildren, Jason Merchant, Bret Merchant, Christina Hagan, and Tessa Glascock. Also survived by 10 great grandchildren. Helen was retired from the State of Louisiana where she was employed as a secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs. She loved making fudge and divinity candy as Christmas presents for all her family in her earlier years prior her health declining. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Graveside Service at First Baptist Church Cemetery of Tickfaw, 14342 Highway 442, Tickfaw, Louisiana 70466, on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 3:00 pm. Visitation will be held in the chapel of Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd., Hammond, LA on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm. I JUST LEARNED OF HELEN'S PASSING AND I AM VERY SAD TO LOSE A DEAR HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND. WE SHARED MANY GOOD TIIMES TOGETHER DURING OUR TEEN-AGE YEARS AND I ALWAYS LOVED HER. MY SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO ALL OF HER FAMILY.
