Ted Gilbreath Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2012.
Ted Carter Gilbreath, age 76, passed away peacefully following a battle with cancer on Friday, the 31st of August 2012, at The Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Ted was born on the 29th of March 29 1936, in Scottsboro, Alabama, but lived his early childhood in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended W B Ray High School, Del Mar College and Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas. He moved to Houston in 1960, and later met his soul mate, Joyce, to whom he was married for 45 years. His only son, Kevin Scott Gilbreath, was born in 1969.
He was employed for more than three decades by The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Throughout his career, he maintained great pride in being associated with this hospital. He enjoyed close relationships with physicians, colleagues, employees and friends in the many facets of hospital administration. He retired in 2000. After retirement he served on the Board of Directors of Houston Area Parkinson Society (H.A.P.S) for 10 years. He believed passionately in the mission of this organization.
Golf was a large part of his life. He enjoyed the outdoors, comradery with fellow golfers, but not always his score. During the last ten years, he started art lessons and sketched extensively. He loved history and traveled the world with friends and family to bring the same history to life. He enjoyed fun times and good humor with their close friends and family as he lived his life.
He is survived by wife, Joyce; son, Scott; and a brother, A. James Gilbreath; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and celebrate Ted's life during a reception from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 10th of September, in the Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
At a later date, the family is to gather for a private memorial service.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family kindly requests that contributions be directed to the Houston Area Parkinson Society, 2700 Southwest Freeway, Ste. 296, Houston, TX, 77098.

Joyce, thinking of you and Scott as this 8 year anniversary nears. How can it be? Our guys are together again. Can still hear Ted, Jim and Jerry laughing & so tickled at each other & regaling others with their many hilarious stories. Seems like yesterday! I know you miss Ted terribly. He adored you. Grateful for the many wonderful memories with the Gilbreath family.
Love,

Dear Joyce and Scott: The 7 years during which I was Ted's secretary were my happiest at Methodist. He was a deeply compassionate gentleman. God bless you and your family.

Joyce and Scott,
You are constantly in our thoughts. Prayers are with you even though we are not with you in person, we are there in spirit. We will miss Ted's presence in our gatherings but his spirit will remain with us forever.

I had the pleasure to work with Ted when he was a VP at The Methodist Hospital with responsibilities over the laboratory services. We (the chair of Pathology at BCM and TMH, Jack L. Titus, MD, PhD; Jaime Davis, PhD, Associate Director of Laboratories, Ted and I) met weekly in Dr. Titus' office to discuss adminsitrative issues in the department at the hospital. Ted and Jack had a great sense of humor and a tight working relationship that formed a real team approach to issues that faced both institutional interests. He was as sincere a person as I have ever known, a careful listener and advocate for our mutual patients. I am proud to have counted him among my colleagues and friends. His legacy will survive him with all who knew him and worked with him.
