Helen L. Slochum

SLOCUM Helen L. Slochum Bank teller, 88 Mrs. Helen L. Slocum, 88, of Whiting, died Aug. 5, 2006, in Crestwood Manor Health Care, Whiting. Born in Jersey City, she lived in Oceanport, Cranford and Westfield before moving to Whiting in 1976. Mrs. Slocum was a secretary at Union County College in Cranford, and, later, was a teller with the Cenlar Bank in Whiting. She retired in 1987. A member and Eucharistic minister at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Whiting, she also belonged to the churchs Episcopal Church Women, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Pines Chapter 290, Whiting. Mrs. Slocum was the wife of the late James H. Slocum Sr, who died in 1998, and mother of the late James H. Slocum Jr., who died in 2000. She is survived by a daughter, Joan E. Alder of Mountainside; a sister, Flora L. Dear of Fort Meyers, Fla., and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in Sherlock Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church, Cranford. The cremation will be private. Funeral arrangements are by the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Rd., Whiting. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Holisticare Hospice, 54 East Main St., Toms River, N.J. 08753.
