GREENSBORO — Helen Louise McNaull Stone, widow of Mr. William H. Stone Jr., died Saturday, December 5, 2009, at her home.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 617 N. Elm Street. The family will receive friends following the service, in the Blair Hagan Parlor.
Helen was the daughter of the late Thaddeus Weatherly McNaull and Margaret Woodson McNaull. She was also preceded in death by her younger brother Thaddeus Weatherly McNaull Jr.
After graduating from Canton High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and master's degree in education, Mrs. Stone worked at Cone Mills Laboratories as a chemist. An unexpected request for her to substitute teach led to a mid-career change. She became a teacher at Ben L. Smith High School in Greensboro for nearly a quarter century. In earning her certification at Duke University to teach advanced placement chemistry, Mrs. Stone drew the attention of the College Board and they asked her to become an exam reader for advanced placement chemistry.
She later became a College Board representative, instructing teachers on methodologies for teaching chemistry. In recognition of her work in education, the State of North Carolina presented Mrs. Stone with its Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1987. That same year, she was also the recipient of the Chemical Manufacturers Association's Catalyst Award, given annually to the country's most outstanding chemists and chemistry teachers.
Mrs. Stone was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
She had an unquenchable zest for life, loved to laugh with her many friends and students, and enjoyed time with her family, especially her trips to the North Carolina coast.
Mrs. Stone is survived by her son, William H. III, of Franklin, and Cindy; son, Reed, of Greensboro; daughter, Dianne Norton of Lexington, S.C., and her husband, Doug; and daughter, Lynn Chafin of Greensboro and husband, David. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, William Stone IV of Asheville, Andy Nesbit of Columbia, S.C., Steffi Norton Hiltgen of Chesnee, S.C., and husband, John, Nick Norton of Lexington, S.C., and Mark Chafin, Chris Chafin, and Sam Chafin, all of Greensboro, Laura Norton Petrovich and husband, Michael, of San Diego, Calif., and Chris Norton of New York City; and great-grandson, Copeland Petrovich.
Mrs. Stone was also indebted to her caretakers, Sugar Dunlap and Debbie Stewart and to her doctor, Walter Pharr, a former student.
Memorials, celebrating her lifelong passion of learning and teaching, may be made in Helen Stone's honor to the UNCG Chemistry Department, 1000 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel is assisting the Stone family.

Ms. Stone was my homeroom teacher and my chemistry teacher! She made learning fun she treated us all like we were her kids! Even in the hallway, she was on task! Wow, we were blessed to have a teacher like Ms. Stone!

Helen Stone was an inspiration to me and a mentor when I began teaching at Smith High. I had the opportunity to serve as one of the High IQ coaches when she was the head coach, and I learned so much from her. Helen was one of the brightest and most interesting women I ever had the privilege to know, and I will miss her. May she rest in peace.

I taught with Helen at Smith High School for many years. What a remarkable woman! She was loved by students and her fellow teachers. We reconnected by e-mail this past summer and she was as spunky as ever! Unfortunately she wasn't able to join us for lunch that day in August. However, I am so glad that I was at least able to share a few e-mails with her!

Below is the final posting I made for mom at carepages.com. Thank you all for your entries here at the News & Record. I finally had a chance to read them late last night. They were a comfort to me and have been to the rest of our family too. Thank you so much for remembering her to us.

THANKSGIVING
Posted Dec 7, 2009 7:21am
Reading back over some of the original posts from the beginning of this year, I re-read the comforting words once again following mom's miraculous comeback from February of this year... A hospital nurse who was tending my mother observed, "Make no mistake, this is a gift. This is not a result of anything medically we have done. This is from a higher power."
I am grateful once again, for the additional 10 months that our family was given to spend with our mother and mima... I would like to thank all of you for you thoughtful words and for the continued support and love you have shown and given us.
She fought a hard battle -- and dealt with incredible pain and physical suffering. It was hard to watch her go through all of that. I am thankful she now is pain free -- "...there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away... behold I make all things new." (rev. 21) It gives me great comfort to think of her as "new" and youthful and happy and dancing once again (she absolutley loved to dance) in heaven -- and reunited with her mother and father and little brother and all the other family members who were there waiting for her...
At times mom was not quite herself -- because of the pain and because of the medicines she was on to deal with the pain. There were difficult moments we experienced with her but there were moments of great joy and thankfulness too. I was thankful for the few times she led us in prayer -- for seeing the full circle of God come back to her heart. Like my husband Doug said, she was a gracious lady... she was graciousness tempered with spunkiness... there was a soft and caring side of her that I will always treasure. When we talked and when we were together, she always wanted to know how we -- her children and grandchildren -- were doing... as well as our extended family and friends -- she cared deeply.
And she loved to laugh -- I think I will always remember that more than anything. She loved funny and humorous stories and would save and pass on those stories to watch us laugh too. Laughter was definitely good medicine for her soul. In spite of her pain and suffering, and in those wonderful moments when she was clear-headed and herself, she remained positive and upbeat with a generous smile and thoughtful words of encouragement -- and always ever-ready to share a good deep belly laugh with those around her.
She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Stone was also one of my favorite teachers at Ben L. Smith. She loved chemistry, but was involved with so much of her student's lives, from coaching the girl's tennis team to advising the quiz bowl team. My condolences to her family.

I am stunned to read that Mrs. Stone was not a teacher from the outset, because she was a natural! Many of us hung out in her class room at lunch or during free periods, simply because she was welcoming-not an easy feat for a high school teacher! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Lynn and family,
Please accept my deepest sympathies. Not only did Helen teach me in high school, she helped me when I became an AP chemistry teacher many years later. She has always been a role model for me and her advice to me was priceless.

I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Stone as my AP Chemistry teacher. Truly one of the finest teachers I ever had. She cared enough to challenge her students to achieve at the very highest level, and when you didn't put the effort in, she would let you know in no uncertain terms. God bless you and your family.

The technical methods I learned from Mrs. Stone are ones that I use to this day as an engineer. I cannot thank her enough for the work that she did and the emotional investment she made in her students.
God Bless Helen Stone.

I just found out about the passing of Ms. Stone. She is one of my heros. She taught me much more than AP Chemistry at Smith. Her loving kindness and sense of humor taught hunderds of people how to enjoy learning and appreciate life. The world is diminished. I will miss her greatly.

Helen Stone came into my life through my husband James. He was one of her students at Smith. They reconnected at the local grocery store shortly after we moved back to Greensboro in the early 90s. Ms. Stone (as I knew her) heard James' voice across one of the isles & actually called his name "James Moore"....they were close for several years as James helped her with most of her computer needs but more importantly we loved to hang out & eat Bojangles chicken for dinner with her. We loved hearing her stories & hearing about her kids & grandkids. James always told me great stories about Ms. Stone...she truly was one of his mentors in his education & life. I came to know her as a friend & she will truly be missed. May God be with you & your family during this time of mourning.

Ms. Stone was a wonderful, fun person! She always made this under-achiever feel good about chemistry, and she loved playing charades with our Honor Society group. She voluntarily chaperoned a trip to the beach for us when we graduated and made it better with her presence. She touched many lives and will live on in the hearts of her students.
