Helen WIEBE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Feb. 14, 2012.
WIEBE, Helen
Helen Wiebe was born on February 13, 1920 at Dalmeny, Saskatchewan, and died peacefully on February 9, 2012 in Abbotsford to be present with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom she loved and served many years of her life. Her parents were George Willam and Margareta (Niebuhr) Wiebe. She was the sixth child in the Wiebe family of eleven. Helen's education in school was to grade eight. Her favourite subject was mathematics. She enjoyed outdoor sports, in summer it was softball and in the winter, ice skating. These sport activities helped her to relax after a day's work. After finishing grade eight she had to stay at home to help her mother with household duties. This she did until her younger sisters finished their elementary education. Helen had one year of Bible School in Dalmeny before she left home. Helen's first jobs away from home were in Saskatoon for several years. She then moved to Vancouver, BC. There she again had several different jobs; the longest and most interesting was thirty-four years with the T-Eaton's department store. Helen worked at the store until it closed. She then was ready for retirement. Helen had a good singing voice. For many years she sang in the choir at the First Baptist Church. In her later years she sang in the West Vancouver Senior's Choir. She did this until her doctor informed her not to drive her car anymore. This affected her emotional outlook for the future. Her brother, George, felt she needed to be in an assisted living care home. He moved her to the Tabor Court in Abbotsford where she received very good care. After about four years there she required full care so she was moved to the Cottage Pavilion. Here she also received full care for the last year of her life. Helen was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, and five brothers. She is survived by her one sister, Margaret, in San Jose, California, two brothers, Walter (Rosa) in Vancouver, and George (Ruby) in Abbotsford. There also are two sisters-in-law, Dorothy in Vancouver and Elizabeth in Abbotsford plus many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. We express our thanks to the people that took good care of Helen in the Tabor Court and the Cottage Pavilion. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 969 Burrard Street, downtown Vancouver. In loving memory of my dear, sweet Aunt Helen—I am so thankful for the many visits & good times we shared over the years. I remember enjoying the swings with you at Stanley Park, going out for fish & chips, your visits with Aunt Mary to Calif., & for always making me feel so special. Recently, I looked up the recipe you gave me years ago for your shortbread & I have since made it…what sweet memories it brings back to me. And I so appreciate the time we could spend together these past couple of months. You helped me appreciate the goodness of the Lord so much more during that time. But most of all, I am thankful that we shared a common bond of love for our Lord. I know that you are now enjoying His presence! Thank you for being you & for your love! With love, Janet
