Hi Mom.
Sorry I haven't written for a long time - we did not forget you; in fact, I think of you all the time, especially when I see something, or experience something new, I always wish you were here to share it. But I keep telling myself that you got to travel to various places with all your family, near and far, so you saw a lot more than so many who have lived in the States all their lives. Of course, I'm glad you got to see so much more than most who have come from China!!
Did the family tell you that Pat and Nick got married last year? They're so happy together and they just celebrated their first anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. You would be so happy for them.
I went to Chicago last month and want you to know your house is still in good shape! Your grandchildren back there are growing like weeds and doing well at school. Just think - Erica has finished her first year at university! And JuJu and Christine had a baby girl, Sammie, in December. I kept wishing you could see her - she's so alert and cute, and Betsy bought one of those little strollers to keep her happy when she's cranky in the house (like you used to do with Erica).
I'm finally getting back to writing about your life so that I can give a record to all your children and grandchildren to keep forever. There's still moments when I need to ask you a question a bout whatever you said to me in my recorder, but I suddenly realize that I can't. Though maybe you can hear me think.
There's always all kinds of news here in California, but I don't have time to write a "book". Linelle and Galen are celebrating their 25th anniversary on July 6th, so can you believe how fast the years have gone by? Lori and Ron moved up to the Seattle area a couple years ago and they seem to love it there. Ron has a good job and he gets to travel to London, Switzerland and Germany a number of times each year. Linelle & Galen are taking me to visit Lori in August and to give them a housewarming party while we're there, so it sounds like fun. Pat's kids and grandchildren are all fine - Michael is in college already. I haven't kept up with Kari, so maybe she's about ready to go to college, and little Kelly has graduated from pre-school. Bob and Laura's Bryan and Katie are growing up so fast and I hear they're doing very well in school in Frement. Your grandson Chuck is the only one of your grandchildren who's still unmarried, but I hear he's happy being a fireman in Berkeley. And latest news - BeeBop and Johnny are going to have a baby girl in September!! Barbara and Kent seem to have a full schedule with his three daughters. Lee is doing very well now that he's recuperated from knee replacement surgery in December and also got a new artificial leg which is lighter and up-to-date (recommended by his Dr.)
I miss being able to talk to you and Lil, and even making wisecracks to Lincoln. Love, Nellie

Hi Mom, I can't believe another year has passed since you left us and I still miss chatting with you by phone whenever something happens here in California. So much has happened since I last wrote, but the most shocking thing was that Lil left us suddenly in January to be with you. You know how protective she was of me, and bossy at times thoughout my life - now I miss her calls to remind me to do something, or to watch a certain TV program, or to plan our trips to Chicago. We were all so shocked, and I, especially, thought that we all had your genes and Lil would live a long life.
You will be happy to know that I finally retired from the college district. My last working day was June 30th but I was paid till the end of August because I used up my vacation. Lil was really looking forward to my retiring so that she could plan to take me places, but I regret so much that she's not here to be excited with me. I finally got all new double windows in my house in June and you can relax now that I feel safer. Also, Galen's friend built new library cabinets with glass doors for my books that you wanted me to get long ago, so wish you could see them. Without Lil being here, I helped Lee and the girls as much as I could. I got part of my house fixed up, and the garden too, for Barbara's wedding day on August 16th, so that the wedding party could get dressed and have their photos done here. Lee was not able to get their house cleaned up & ready in time. Anyway, everything turned out very lovely and Barbara was a beautiful bride. Betsy & Woodie and all the Chicago family came out except JuJu (he's getting ready for his own wedding). I did have some bad luck in March - I was downtown getting some routine lab tests for my Doctor and tripped & dislocated my left elbow walking to the hospital. I was trying to hard to focus on being careful and I don't know how I tripped - it happened so quickly and is the first time in my life that I fell & hurt myself. I was not able to go to work for almost 2 months, but am almost 100% now. Still doing therapy exercises daily as my elbow and shoulder still gets tight. If Lil were here, my accident would have never happened because she would not let me walk anywhere - she would drive me to the front door!
So many things happened this year - Lori and Ron moved up to Seattle area in June. I miss Lori a lot but she plans to fly down to stay with me now and then. Linelle (she just turned 50) & Galen left for Paris, Brussels & the Netherlands this week for 3 weeks, so I am pet-sitting their dog. I can't remember if you ever saw their cute Sheltie. Anyway, she misses here parents so she follows me around every time I get up to do something. I even try to take her for a walk to the park once a day!
Everybody's fine - Lee's managing very well; Pat and her entire family are fine and the grandchildren are growing up so fast; and all in Chicago are keeping so busy. Your great-grandchildren back there are so big now. Lee, Lori and I will be flying to Chicago on Oct 2nd for JuJu's wedding - he's marrying Frankie's mommy. We remembered the gold crucifix and gold chain that you wanted us to give to JuJu from you. Lil had given it to Wendy to lock up a year or so ago, so they have it ready.
We all miss you a lot but know you're keeping an eye on Lil and William. Hope Lincoln is behaving!
Love, Nellie

Hi Mom,
Been a long time since I had a chance to sit down and visit with you. But I know that you know that I have been thinking of you all the time! The family has really been keeping me busy with one thing or another. (In reality, I just have become slower and so things just take longer.) Gail and I went to Reno for our birthdays in March. We had a very good time and enjoyed every minute of it. Then came Mike, Tom and Laura's birthdays, followed by Easter. In May, I was Kari's sponsor for Confirmation. Nellie made great improvements and was released by her doctor to go back to work. I am pretty sure that her last day will be June 30th and I think that she is now ready to retire. Lee has been busy carrying on with Lil's tradition of remember you and William on special days. He usually picks out very unusual flowering plant and brings them to my house for you guys and also me to enjoy. Chicago, Kerry graduated from St. Therese's and will be going on to Walter Payton High School. You remember, that's where Erica has been attending school. We are all very proud of Kerry, as I am sure you are too. The next big family gathering here will be for Barb's wedding. Everyone is very excited about it. Beth and I will be giving her a shower in the middle of July. I have been told that most of the Chicago relatives will be joining us for the wedding. I think that Tommy is the only one not coming West. He will be getting married in October and is saving his vacation time for his honeymoon. He sure has grown into a very responsible young man. Wendy and Wanda and their families are going to Alaska in August and will stop off in California on their way home to share in celebrating Barb's wedding. Our neighborhood association had a nice bench placed in the park down the street, in memory of Lil. It has a really nice plaque attached. The bench sits right near the trees we had planted for William. We now call the area, "Our Family Plot". There are a couple of picnic tables right close by so we could even go down there for a picnic. Take care, Mom, and give my love to William, Lincoln, George, Lil, and Michael.

Hi Mom, Here I am in Calif. not for fun but to attend the services for Lilly. No need to tell you what went wrong because I know you were there holding her hand and leading her all the way. It is very painful to have this loss of Lil, but I know she is with you, William, Lincoln, Michael and George. I know this is a great loss for all of us, but more so for Nellie, since she depended on Lil for everything, and for myself equally a great loss. I'm going to miss the fun times with her in Chicago...all the great cooking that she does. But I will miss her because I know if I had a problem, I could call her for advice. And now I will have to depend on Nellie and Pat for help. Woody is always ready to give me advice when I ask for it..He came here with me to Calif. and is grieving along with all of us. Lil's loss is felt by all. Today, as I am sending you this note, Wendy, Patrick, Moygie and Ju Ju are to arrive soon. Have to close for now, I miss you and love you...we all love and miss all of you. Gung Hay Fot Choy Mom. Love, Betsy 1/26/2003

Hi Pau, Happy Thanksgiving! I wrote to you last night but the web site was notresponding and I guess my message got lost. Jeanne and I cooked the extra turkey parts yesterday. She was very interested (finally) in just how this is done. She even took notes on the procedure. Of course Bob already knows how to prepare the turkey like William taught me. Bob always takes Laura and the kids to Watsonville for Thanksgiving dinner with her relatives before ending the day with us at Auntie Lil's. Erica Stearnswas on national TV a week or so ago. The Chicago Children's Choir was singing with some celebraties--a special for Ronald McDonald. We didn't get to see her very much, but it was still a good program that you would have enjoyed. Give William a big hug for me. I need to get busy on that 20# bird now. I think Bob will be over soon to help tie it up correctly and put it in the oven. He says that is "tradition".

Hi Pau, Hi Dad
Decided to write since I've thought of you both today. Pau, Auntie Lil brought little Christmas Trees for you and Dad. We have to find some tiny lights and decorations to make them festive for you both. Dad, you should be smilin' right now... Tom and Kelly are watching John Wayne in The Quiet Man. It's hard to believe it's been 14 years, but we've kept you close in our memories. You'd be proud of the grandkids. They are all great and loving people.

Hi Mom,
I just wanted to let you know that Gail and I just returned home from a three week vacation. We drove to Chicago and stayed with Betsy and Woodie for a couple of nights. We got to see all of the kids and families, even Tommy. Wanda was there just for a short time as she had to go to Canada for someting to do with her job. The rest of us all went to Patricks house to celebrate Wendy's birthday. He has sure done a marvelous job finishing off the house, especially the basement which is now a large playroom for the kids. After we left Chicago, we drove to Beloit and had lunch with a school friend of mine. It was great just catching up on what has happened during the past years. Then Gail and I drove up to Shawano, Wisconsin to help celebrate my brother's 70th birthday. We stayed there about a week. Also went to Milwaukee to see my two aunts before we left Wisconsin. On the drive home, we managed to stop to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. There was snow on the ground in places, but the roads were all clear and dry when we were on them. It has been very warm in San Mateo since my return. Mike was in charge of taking care of my house while we were gone. He enjoyed it, and even had a couple of parties to say good bye to some friends who were going off to college. He did take good care of the place, even mowed the lawn so it looked good when I returned home. Happy Birthday Mom, remember, I love you! Love always, Pat

Hi Mom,
I am having Pat enter this into your guest book for me since I do not have the computer availability to do it myself. I just wanted to wish you a very happy birthday and tell you that we all miss you VERY MUCH. The Chicago gang is well and said to tell you that they love you, even Woodie. Give our love to William and Lincoln, please. You will be happy to know that Mary Jane comes over quite often. She says that you were one of her most favorite patients. Bye for now, I'll get back to you later. Love always, Betsy

Hi Mom,
It's late but I have to send this to you before I go to bed. Can't believe that a full year has passed since you left us. Still miss you very much and think of you everywhere I go and wishing you were with us to enjoy the occasion. I've had a very busy year - forgot to tell you that Patrick & Steph and family came to Calif in July and they just raved & raved about their 1st trip to this state. They were happy to be able to say hello to you at Pat's. Last week I finally cleared all of Lincoln's closet by myself and sorted everything to go to Goodwill and the nicer things to go to Assistance League. The girls have been too busy to help me, so after a year, I dropped everything else and worked like a dog the whole weekend! By the way, you will be so happy to know that Frances and I no longer own any part of the Ah Sam property. We and our attorney got Mayme's boys to buy our shares before their lease ends next year. So now Frances and I are each trying to find separate properties so that I can be comfortable for the rest of my life. I know you never believe me when I tell you how old I am, but next month I will be 71. I can't believe it either-don't know where the time went. Linelle & Galen came down with the Grandpets and stayed over Tuesday and Wednesday nights. J-J cooked dinner for me and we had a good visit. Now I'm glad to have a quiet house to myself. Am still trying to get used to being alone after almost 50 years. Sometimes I get a little down because I now have to do everything myself, but I get over it and try to remember your positive attitude.
Lots of love,
Nellie (and family too)
Love, Pat

Hi Mom,
I'm just sitting here watching you and William and feeling a bit down. My thoughts keep going back to Sept. 2001 and how very ill you were then. Gail and I are planning a trip to Wisconsin later this month. My brother will turn 70 on the 27th and really wants me to be there to celebrate with him. I have been having a problem with High Blood Pressure but I saw the doctor on Friday and he is pleased with my progress. He would like to see the blood pressure down a bit more and thinks that will happen in the near future. He sees no problem with the planned trip. I will see him again in October when I return to San Mateo. For the past two days, Jeanne and I have been clearing and painting Kari's room. She was ready for a change and did very well in painting the trim in her room. She turned 14 on Saturday. Mike and Kari have returned to school already. Bryan, Katie and Kelly don't start for a coulple more days. Katie and Kelly will just be in pre-school for two days a week. Kelly's legs are very long and now she is about an inch taller than Katie. But Katie is still a take-charge person and doesn't let the height detour her at all. She and Bryan rough house with Bob quite a bit and she has learned to stand up for herself. They are adorable children and miss having their great grandmother around to play with them. Time for me to sign off now. Love, Pat

Hi Mom,
Well I finally decided to bring your life or the final chapter to a closure...the closure that you need so you can rest inpeace. Woodie and I brought you to Calif as you wished. It was a difficult decision but you gave me "signs" not to leave you home alone and I got the kids and your great-children to all agree that you belong here with William as you always wished.
Nay-Nay and LaLa especially didn't want you to leave, but I explained that you would be happier out here in Calif and they agreed to let you come.
Lil brought the "books" over and I watched Pat put you and little trinklets (including Hung-Bows) in there, and now you have a special place by William.
Woodie and I came here for a week's vacation, and we're having a grand time eating all day and visiting with all the family. Your grandchildren here are all getting big...Michael just graduated from hi-school and Kari from Jr-hi, nad Bryan from Kindergarten. Tonight we are all going to dinner at a restaurant called Fong's before I have to go home tomorrow. Needless to say we all miss you....but because you are here, that you wouldn't be in our hearts always. We love you Mom and thanks for giving us so much and not asking for anything in return.
I'm getting a computer soon, so that I can write to you.
God watch over you and Bless you always....
Love Ya.

Hi Mom,
You were with all of us in spirit on Mother's Day and every day. J-J and Galen, Lori and Ron took me out to a French restaurant on the Friday before Mother's Day because they don't like going out on the holiday as the service and food is lousy. Had a very nice dinner. I've been very, very busy the past few weeks at work, esp., since I was trying to catch up before going to Chicago, but I never was able to get caught up! I had to go the the attorney's office several times to sign papers and documents to get Lincoln's estate tax return filed on time last week. I also spent a couple of weeks writing William's history (in the evenings) for Pat's brother, and I finally finished it over a week ago - wrote 6 pages and included stories you told me last July, plus information that I got from Pat and her kids. It turned out very well so I'm glad that's finished & I hope Pat's brother likes it.
Lil and I flew to Chicago last Tuesday afternoon, and we had a good time with all the family. The little ones are growing up so fast, esp. Kerry. She's suddenly so tall and only going on 14. Lil and I took it easy this trip and we didn't do as much cooking as we usually do because the kids had events to attend and Erica went to overnight camp with her school. One night I made your favorite roasted baby back ribs - cooked 4 racks for 8 people, and it was all gone by the end of the meal. Lil also broiled some French lamp chops because Woodie likes lamb. The rest of the family wouldn't eat it. Mary Jane stopped that evening and brought a homemade chocolate cake from her mother's recipe with cream cheese frosting. It was great. We gave her some gifts that she loved, and I gave her a copy of William's story to read, since she always remembers the stories you told her about your life. She was very impressed. The flourescent light above your kitchen table has been blinking and dimming once in a while. Woodie said he will go down to the basement the next time he's down to find a new light bulb to change. Meanwhile, when we all sit around the table to laugh and talk, if the light dims, everybody says you're either scolding us or telling us that enough is enough! So every day we all chuckle because we can hear you talking to us. Mary Jane would laugh every time the light flickered and look up and say "Gram, we know", etc., etc.
On my first night in Chicago, I went to bed in Betsy's bed as usual, but this time she had gotten a new matress, so guess what - the next morning I didn't wake up till 11:19 am. I slept almost 9 hours and have never stayed in bed that long unless I was sick!
Came home late last night, and today Linelle came down from the lake before noon, so Lori drove us and Lee, Lil & Barbara to all the cemeteries for Memorial Day. By the way, Betsy took us to Mt. Auburn Cemetery on Friday morning (to beat the crowds) and we only put flowers on Dad's grave, Unc's and George's graves as it was very chilly and windy. I'm taking it easy right now since I have go go back to work tomorrow. I miss you lots. Love, Nellie and all the family.

Hi Mom, It's been awhile since I last wrote. It has been very busy around here. Last Sunday was Mother's day, a day that I thought about you and all the wonderful things you did for me a lot. Bob and Jeanne and their families came over here for dinner. Chuck had to work, but he called. Nellie has been extremely busy writing William's history/life story so I can send it to my brother for our family history book. Bryan is going to be in a parade at his school this coming Friday. All the Kindergarden kids are suppose to make a hat that looks like a car and wear it in the parade. He convinced his mother that he wanted a fire truck. I am anxious to see it. The two little girls, Kelly and Katie are still best of friends and get along very well together. Sharing is hard, but they seem to know what belongs to who and keep it that way. They are both very talkative, you would love to sit and converse with them. And they love to kiss and hug, another thing you would enjoy. Gail is planning to take Mike on their annual Fishing trip again in June after Mike graduates from Aragon High School. Kids are really growing up, Kari will graduate from 8th grade in June and Bryan will graduate from Kindergarden. Please fill William in on what is going on down here. He remembers Mike as a 4year old and Kari as only 2 months. Chuck is still single, but now has a new girlfriend. Someone he met last September. They seem to be getting along fairly well. But I don't count on anything happening! Take care and remember that you are and always will be LOVED! Love, Pat

Hi Mom,
The days and weeks have gone by so quickly since I last chatted with you - New Year's, Valentine's, etc flew by and I was always frustrated that I don't have time to do "nothing". I gave up trying to write holiday cards and had hoped to get all of Lincoln's acknowledgements written and mailed before the holidays, and I was always so short of time. I had put it all aside to go to Chicago to take care of you. Now it continues to prey on my mind, so I'm going to get it done, no matter what and hope that all his friends and relatives will understand. I've been busy helping the attorney with information needed for his estate tax return which is due May 22nd. This past several weeks, I also had to push to get all the information for our income tax returns ready, and now I feel good that I was able to send the package to the accountant this past Thursday and i got it in over one week before the deadline!! Pat, and sometimes Jeanne and Kelly takes me to work every morning. Lil picks me up for lunch and after work. I always feel guilty bothering everybody. You'll be happy to know that Linelle is staying with me every Sunday and sometimes Monday too for the next four months, as she is substituting for someone at her old school. She's getting good pay so she doesn't mind. I enjoy having her around to chat and watch TV together. She's going to help me go through Lincoln's things when she has a little time - she's just as bad as I am, never having enough time for everything. She works from Monday - Thursday, so she comes down from the lake on Sunday and goes home on Thursday afternoon. It's getting late and I have to wind down before bedtime. I still can't get used to not talking to you in the evenings. Love, Nellie

Hi Mom, I didn't realize that it was so long since I last wrote to you. It's almost St. Patrick's day! Gail was down here for a few days. We had a good time, and were very busy. The kids really enjoy being with her. Katie slept over last night. I think it was her first night away from her parents. Bob and Laura took Bryan to see a play, JOSEPH. They all really enjoyed it. Hi Mom,
We all miss you and think of you a lot during the holidays.
I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to get near my computer to tell you that Lil and I had a good time in Chicago for Thanksgiving, first at Patrick's and Stephanie's on Thanksgiving Day, and then Thanksgiving II at your house on Saturday. You were there in spirit as Wendy and Moygie helped to make a large amount of stuffing, and when they got into an argument over how you taught them to do it, Wendy put your picture on the kitchen table so that you could be the referee.. After we got back to California, the month of December went by so fast and I got so behind in getting my work done. I must be getting old - I seem to be busy all the time, but the work still piles up. Barbara & Lori came over on the 15th to put lights on my trees to that I could decorate, so this year I at least got the decorations up before Christmas Eve !! But didn't finish my shopping till 2 days before Christmas. Barely managed to finish the wrappings before Christmas dinner yesterday - I miss being able to talk to you. 26 people, including the little ones came to dinner and presents last evening, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. All of Pat's family came except Charlie, who had to work. Of course, my family, including the Bad Boys enjoyed themselves, and Lil and Lee's family, including Kent and girls enjoyed the big ham dinner and gifts. Kay & Victor are fine and miss you too. Katie & Kelly are so cute and smart. I figure you're keeping an eye on Lincoln and probably lecturing him on eating healthily! Today I have to finish wrapping packages for Christmas II at Lori's house tomorrow. Linellie is planning an English style dinner of prime rib, yorkshire pudding, creamed corn, spinach, etc. She's making little miniature crab cakes for appetizer as a remembrance of her Dad, who loved crab cakes.
Love you, Nellie

Hi Mom,
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Presents are all wrapped and under the tree. Stockings will be hung by the chimney with care tomorrow. It is now the day before the night before Christmas. Tomorrow evening (Christmas eve) Bob, Laura, Bryan, Katie, Jeanne, Tom, Mike, Kari, and Kelly will be here for dinner and presents later. On Christmas day we will all go to Nellie's as usual. We always look forward to that as it is a good time to visit, as well as partake in all the good food. Nellie's house always looks so festive which adds to the fun atmosphere. I won't get to see Gail until towards the end of the month. She has her family with her in Placerville until the 28th. I miss you. Wish you were HERE! Love, Pat

Hi Pau, it's time to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. I am doing the turkey again this year, hope you and William will shed your guiding light down to help me. Lil and Nellie went to Chicago to be with Betsy and her family. Linelle and Lori are having a small Thanksgiving at Linelle and Galen's place this year. Charlie has to work. The rest of the crew will be here sometime or other today. It is always nice to have the family together, laughing and reminising, telling the younger generation tales from the past, not to mention filling our stomach with good food till we feel we will burst! Gail will be having Thanksgiving at her house with her mother, sister, George, Joanne and Christy. I wish she could be here with us, but you know that story! Time to get the turkey ready, come on to the kitchen, I need your help. Love, Pat

Hi Mom -
Guess what - it's my 70th birthday today! You never believed me whenever I told you how old I am. I don't believe it either. Jay-Jay called at 7 am today from Cape Cod to get me out of bed and to wish me Happy Birthday. She will be home on Saturday. Pat gave me a cute ceramic pumpkin filled with orange pansies; Lil & Lee gave me some special pesto & cheese bread/roll for my dinner, and Lori, Galen and a lot of people at work called to say HB or sing. Am tired of hearing that song today! I even got a big Mickey Mouse from my student assistant who thought I should have a toy instead of the usual fancy gifts for my birthday. Mickey is sitting on my sofa, keeping me company! The kids are taking me to a birthday dinner on Sunday - don't know where. I miss hearing your advice and sharing my birthday experiences with you.
Pat's family planned a beautiful Calif memorial service for you last Saturday. Father Miles (Charlie's friend) loved all the reflections about you by Bob, Charlie and Barbara, and he chuckled and laughed at the stories of your experiences throughout life. It was a beautiful day & you would been so proud of your grandchildren.

Hi Mom, Just wanted to let you know that we had a memorial service for you here in CA over the week-end. Because of world conditions at the time of your death, not everyone was able to attend your funeral mass in Chicago back in September. Charles, Jeanne and Barbara had a LARGE part in putting this one together. 50 people attended the service and then we all went to the China Village Restaurant in Belmont for lunch. Nellie and Lil did the ordering--fabulous! Bob(and Bryan), Barbara, and Charles had some very nice things to say about you at the memorial service. It all amounted to the fact that your were and still are LOVED by all of us. We will always remember your great example of love, along with the many things that made you, YOU! Love you, Pau!

Dear Gummy, It was absolutely beautiful! The perfect memorial service:family, faith, friends and fun-in the context of respect and reverence! You have no idea how special, unique and creative your celebration was..I do this all the time...Trust me, yours was extra-ordinary! I was truly honored to be a part!! My 12 noon emergency counseling lasted well over one and a half hours and I thought of you all fondly and missed the luncheon a ton. Would have loved to hear more fabulous Pau Pau stories...my kind of woman! God bless you and your super family, FrMiles

Dear Mom,
Thinking of you on your birthday - you would have been 92! I know that this is the date that the family goes by, since it westernizes the lunar calendar of the 9th day of the 10th month in the year 1909. Uncle Man Biu told me that the conversion to the western calendar is Nov 21, but it's easier to remember the October date.
I really miss talking to you by phone and think of you a lot. I know that you are resting in peace and watching over us.
Love always, Nellie

Pau Pau, Bok Bok,
We're so grateful for all the times we got to share with you. Thank you for everything. Your greatest gift was the lesson learned through your example of kindness and generosity to others.
