Helena Hewitt Obituary

Mrs. Hewitt was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lee Waters Sr., of Konnarock. She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. A. Kenneth Hewitt Jr., and two brothers, Garland B. Waters of Konnarock and William G. Waters of Weaverville, N.C. She is survived by two sons and one daughter, A. Kenneth Hewitt III and his wife, Diane, of Atlanta, Ga., Owen Lee Hewitt and his wife, Kathy, of Virginia Beach and Lisa Hewitt Mayo and her husband, Reed, of Virginia Beach. Also surviving are grandchildren Cherie Hewitt Cable and Alicia Hewitt Canestra of Northern Virginia, Brittany Hewitt, a student at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., and Andrew Hewitt, Jason Mayo and Hunter Mayo of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Lee Cable and Kaylie and Kyle Canestra, also survive her. Also surviving are two brothers, Thomas Lee Waters Jr. of Bristol, Tenn., and R. Mitchell Waters of Chilhowie; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hewitt graduated from Konnarock High School as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Marion Junior College Phi Theta Kappa and received her bachelor¹s degree, magna cum laude, from Newberry College, Newberry, S.C. Her master¹s degree in education was received from George Mason University as a reading specialist. Mrs. Hewitt spent 30 years teaching in the public schools of South Carolina and Virginia. During her tenure she received a number of recognitions and honors, one of which was being selected as one of the most outstanding teachers of Prince William County. After retiring from the Prince William County school system, she has made her home in Chesapeake. She was a member of Apostles Lutheran Church and served as chairwoman of the Social Ministry Committee, the Fellowship Committee and a member of the Congregational Council. She will be remembered as a compassionate, generous and giving person and will be greatly missed. The body has been designated for donation to medical science. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Konnarock by the Rev. Paul Henrickson of Roanoke College and the Rev. Will Robertson. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society, Apostles Lutheran Church, Saint Mathew Lutheran Church, Konnarock Road, Damascus, Va., or to a charity of choice.
