At the age of 95, Helmer went to be with the Lord on September 26, 2017. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. Born in Stord, Norway, on January 30, 1922, Helmer is survived by Judy, his true love and wife of almost 47 years, and brothers John and Nils. He was predeceased by his parents, Thor and Brita, and siblings Borghild, Margit, Bernard, Bernice, Doris, and Leif. Helmer came to Canada at five years old, where his family settled in the Bella Coola Valley. His love of fishing began at the age of six, after accompanying his father on the family sailboat, while looking for the daily catch. Fishing remained an integral part of Helmer's life, and he always found serenity in the sea. As a young adult, he was a radio operator in the Merchant Marines during World War II before becoming an officer with the Correctional Service of Canada. Always looking for something new on the horizon, he earned his Master Mariner Certificate. Following in his father's footsteps, Helmer then established himself as a successful commercial fisherman. He was a fixture in the waters off the British Columbia coast until he retired. Helmer was the epitome of hardworking and took pride in everything he did, traits which he passed on to his children. Helmer's adventurous side inspired him and Judy to live and travel throughout British Columbia and the United States, until recently. He had a mischievous spirit, loved a good laugh and a good party, and enjoyed celebrating every occasion with his family. He is dearly missed by children David (Sandra), Vicky (Ross), and Debbie (Mike). Forever in our hearts, Papa Helmer is remembered by his seven grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 10, at 1 p.m., at Victory Memorial Park (14831 28th Avenue, Surrey). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant House or the Union Gospel Mission.
