WERNER, Helmut, 84, passed away on April 8, 2023. Helmut was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ruth; parents, Rudolf and Eugenie Werner; and son-in-law, John L. Stansbury IV. He is survived by his daughters, Karen Werner and Heidi Stansbury; son, Dan Werner; grandsons, Linus, Zane and Ridge Stansbury; cousin, Edgar Seitz (Gabi); and many friends. Born in Ukraine, he was a refugee during WWII and immigrated to the United States from Germany as a child. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Randolph-Macon College, Birdsong Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the Randolph-Macon College Helmut Werner Men's Soccer Endowment, or a local youth soccer league.

Coach Werner was my PE Professor at R-MC 1968-1969. I was not a great athlete by any stretch of the imagination, so I was delighted when he offered extra credit to anyone who wanted to be a ball boy for soccer games. I saw a lot of soccer and even made some friendships through that connection. Coach was a good and decent man, and I am grateful I had him in my life at that important time. When I returned to Ashland to serve as lead pastor at Duncan Memorial UMC, I visited him once in the hospital and enjoyed reconnecting. May he rest in peace, and may his family have many good memories and grateful hearts for his place in their lives.
