Henry Black Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2024.
Henry Richard Black, M.D., who was born in the Bronx on June 1, 1942, died on May 21, 2024, of complications of spinocerebellar ataxia and dementia. He is survived by his wife, Benita (Lerin) Black; his children, Matthew Black (Becky) and Dana Parker (Luke); a granddaughter, Sabrina Black; a stepson, Joshua Daniels; and a step-grandson, Sam Daniels.
His contributions to the field of hypertension, through his almost 400 published papers, his several textbooks on the subject, his many lectures, and his leadership as president of the American Society of Hypertension cannot be overestimated.
He will be remembered by colleagues, friends and family as a friendly, kind and generous man, who freely gave his time to mentoring young physicians, and to encouraging student-athletes at his Alma Mater, Columbia University who aspired to become doctors. He loved the NY Giants, theater, music of all kinds, movies, and travel. His knowledge of World War ll was beyond that of the ordinary "buff," to which his library can attest. He enjoyed hosting friends at his home. He could be seen rooting at Columbia football, basketball and baseball games. He voted blue all the way.
Donations in his memory may be sent to The Calvary Fund.

Henry was a long-time friend and colleague of mine - we met many, many years ago in Connecticut (when he was at Yale and I was at the University of Connecticut). Our friendship and collegiality lasted for nearly 4 decades as we collaborated on numerous clinical trials, educational programs, scientific advisory boards, and as officers of the American Society of Hypertension. Henry was very generous to me and really helped me to get started in leadership roles in hypertension and preventive cardiology trials - for that I am very grateful. As Benita knows, I have written a formal In Memoriam for Henry that will be published in Hypertension (AHA journal) in September 2024. It was an honor to do so. Henry will be sorely missed. May his memory be a blessing to all of those who knew him/loved him.

Dr. Henry Black, helped introduce me to the field of medicine and was overly generous with connecting me to individuals which gave me an opportunity to enter this field. He freely offered both guidance and mentorship and I and forever grateful

Dear Benita, Matthew, Dana and all the family,

My father, Dr. Benjamin Gavish and I would like to send our condolences. We met Henry about 30 years ago as we begun developing the RESPeRATE device for the non-drug treatment for blood pressure. Henry was an key early supporter and we would alway remember his enthusiasm, his good advice and his personal encouragement for the two crazy Israelis who wanted to change how blood pressure is treated around the world.

I hope you would take some comfort knowing that his contribution continues to save peoples lives everyday.

yours truly
Erez Gavish

Dr. Black,
I was truly blessed to be one of your hypertension fellows at Rush Preventive Medicine.
It was an honor to learn from your about medicine & life.
I will always remember your smile and how your eyes would twinkle when you find something truly funny.
You will be missed!
God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Blessings, Dave Chua

Truly a great mentor, clinical leader, and academic pioneer - HRB helped put Hypertension and Preventive Cardiology on the map as a critical area of specialization in Medicine.

And his patients loved him. The many wonderful contributions Henry made will help to keep his memory warm.
