Henry Preston Sampler, Optical Physicist, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center- Henry passed away on January 12, 2024. Henry was recognized for his major contributions to many NASA projects and scientific instruments such as Hubble Space telescope, Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), the Energetic Gamma Ray Experimental, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and more. He was an award winning leader in his field and great mentor to many. Henry is survived by a loving wife and daughter and a host of friends and family. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Berean Baptist Church, 924 Madison St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with services immediately following. Interment immediately following the service at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crane Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623 .

I worked with Henry for 27 years as a technician . He was a brilliant engineer and a lot of fun to work with. Fishing at rocket launch sites around the world and always working to make the project better. Author of a lot of scientific papers and a true innovator in the field of optical metrology. I miss him...

I'll always remember Henry as a good neighbor who stayed mostly in his home on his computer.
But when he came outside you knew he was ready to do something or help someone.
He'll truly be missed by me and my family. RIP!

Henry was the very friendly husband of my dear friend Gaby. The first time I met him was in late fall 2011. I will miss him dearly, he was always willing to help if help was needed. I was over Henry & Gaby´s house many times for dinner or afternoon coffee and dessert. We had many conversations and many laughs and of course we also talked politics. Take care, Henry!
