Henson M. Evans Jr.

Henson M. Evans, Jr. Henson M. Evans, Jr., "Duke", aged 91, of West Chester, PA passed away peacefully on January 8, 2023, surrounded by family. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Henson M. Evans, Sr. (Jim) and Elsie Gillespie Evans. Duke is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Cann Evans, and sons Merrill (Karen) of Hockessin, DE, Curt (Kim) of Denver, PA, and Dr. Mark (Angie) of Lancaster, PA, six wonderful grandchildren and three terrific great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Scott, at age 42. Duke graduated from West Chester High School in 1949, where he was awarded the Gold Medal for sports, having earned 6 varsity letters, three each in football and baseball. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1953 (1958 MS), where he earned three varsity letters in baseball. Duke proudly served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant anti-aircraft artillery school instructor at Ft. Bliss, TX. He then served for three years as a Captain in the Delaware National Guard. In 1958, Duke began a career in commercial banking, retiring in 1996, as President of Wilmington Trust of Pennsylvania. He then spent ten years working for a firm that managed capital fund-raising campaigns for non-profits. He served three years as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Tri-M Corporation, Kennett Square, PA. Throughout his long career, Duke tirelessly volunteered his time to numerous charitable and service organizations, including West Chester Rotary and YMCA of Greater Brandywine, where he served as Board Chair 2001-2003. He served on the West Chester Area School Board and for seven years coached Little League Baseball. A private graveside service is planned for Saturday January 14, 2023, at 2:00pm, with a public memorial service following at 2:30pm, at Marshallton United Methodist Church, 1282 W. Strasburg Road, West Chester, PA 19382. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Marshallton United Methodist Church.
