Herbert E. Fletcher III

I heard of Hobie's passing from Lenny Moore through my brother Jeff a couple of weeks ago.
Though classmates more than friends, I recall Hobie as being one of those people that appeared to have it all together. He was smart, handsome, athletically gifted and popular; the type of individual that, as a teenager, one admired and was jealous of at the same time.
I recall what I think would have been his first showing of photo's in a small gallery adjacent to the campus of Berwick Acad., very impressive for one his age at the time.
Our paths crossed several times over the years. The summer sock hops at the Drakes Island community center where my Uncle Bob Perry was the director; I think we may have been 7 to 10 years old.
At Berwick we were on the soccer team and swim club together. I have a memory of a senior year cookout at his family cottage; nothing like surfing,hamburgers and beer to cap off the final year of highschool. I think that's when the story of him surfing without benefit of trunks, one early sunday morning, in front of his cottage came up. The last time was at David Emmon's bachelor party in my hometown of Kennebunk, Me.;late seventies or early eighties? David was a childhood friend of mine and a longtime employee of Chick's Marina on the Kennebunk River.
By the looks of Hobies's obituary, he led a very busy and active life. One that most could not approach, let alone match.

It was very sad to hear that Hobie had passed. It was only recently that we reconnected at his father's wake and we started emailing again. We enjoyed many laughs and stories back when I worked for Fletcher Granite from 1986 to 1993. He was always fun to be around. I will miss him. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
