HERBERT GINTIS

Northampton, MA - Herbert Malena Gintis died in Northampton on January 5, following an illness. He was 82.

A Harvard-educated economist who studied behavioral science through a sociobiological lens, he sought to understand human behavior via an interdisciplinary approach addressing aspects of human society including altruism and cooperation, game theory, and human capital theory.

The son of Gerson and Shirley (Malena) Gintis, Herb was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and then attended Harvard University for post-graduate work in mathematics. After receiving his master's degree, he grew disillusioned with the field, and while at Harvard, became a sandal maker with a shop in Harvard Square. He became active in the student protest movement and grew increasingly interested in Marxism and economics. He switched his Ph.D. program at Harvard from mathematics to economics. After graduation, he was hired as an assistant professor by Harvard's Graduate School of Education and then the university's economics department, where he would become an associate professor.

It was during his postgraduate studies that Herb met economist Samuel Bowles and began a collaboration that lasted throughout their careers. In 1974 Herb and Bowles were both hired by the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Their landmark book, Schooling in Capitalist America, has had multiple editions in five languages since it was first published in 1976.

Herb's second joint book with Bowles, Democracy and Capitalism, was a critique of both liberalism and orthodox Marxism and outlined their vision of "postliberal democracy." Their most recent book, A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and its Evolution, was published in 2011. From 1997 to 2006 Herb and anthropologist Robert Boyd co-chaired "Economic Environments and the Evolution of Norms and Preferences," a multidisciplinary research project funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

Herb retired from UMass Amherst as professor emeritus in 2003. In retirement, he was a visiting professor in the economics department of Central European University, University of Siena, and at the Santa Fe Institute.

Herb could often be seen with a mathematics text in hand during his downtime, and could impress on the piano. He had a warm smile, a quick sense of humor and a bold laugh. He and Marci traveled all over the world together during their 63 years of marriage, exploring art and ideas. He loved hosting friends and colleagues for gourmet meals and long, boisterous dinner conversations.

His mind always remained curious: in his remaining days he was studying quantum physics. Herb is survived by his wife Marci (née Griesler) and their son Daniel, and Herb's brother Murray Gintis.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 10:00am, Wildwood Cemetery, Amherst. Donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. https://www.lls.org/ . CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME IS IN CHARGE.

Just found this. Herbert Gintis was my calculus teacher at Penn in 1961. Before the final, he said there would be four questions, and the first would be "State and prove the theorem of Riemann sums."
Since this theorem is so fundamental to just about everything and, though complicated to prove, is breathtaking in the simplicity and beauty of its result, this was a brilliant way of making sure we all understood this marvelous achievement.

Brilliant, funny, an independent thinker, and, most importantly, a very nice person. I haven't seen him in years, but I miss him nonetheless.

Hi Marci, Arthur Reber here. Herb and I were friends back in Lower Merion High and again at Penn. I just heard about his death and, well, it saddened me. I understand he wasn't well recently. I do hope you're fine and, perhaps, remember me....

A brilliant man, always curious about new ideas and new fields of study. He was the most inspiring professor at UMass Amherst in the 1970s.

Sending love to Marci. You and Herb were so much a part of our Cambridge life so many years ago.

I was very sad to hear of Herb´s passing. Although I haven´t seen Herb for many many years, he has always been a bright light in my mind. I took classes from Herb and Sam at UMass in the mid-seventies. Herb was brilliant, iconoclastic and funny. He was always willing to put his ideas on the table and invite any objections. And he was always more than willing to listen to and respond to other points of view. I´m sure Herb has inspired many besides me.

Incredibly smart, funny, sharp, generous, ...admirable.
I enjoyed every minute of his class and speeches.
A great loss.
My sincere condolences to his wife and son.

I met him once, at a Marxism conference at Amherst, never knew him well but his work with Sam Bowles was an inspiration to me as a lefty philosophy student in the 70s. So sad to see this, we still need him.

As a graduate student in economics at the New School for Social Research in NYC, I was introduced to Bowles and Gintis' work, starting with Schooling in Capitalist America. I hope Herb's life story will be an inspiration to smart young people to use radical economic analysis with a view to improving the world.
My condolences to Herb's family, friends, students and all of us inspired by his life and work.

He did, with Sam, such terrific and useful work. As one who shared their political vision, I am so sad that he died at such a--to me--young age.

Herb has been such an inspiration to me for decades. He had a towering intellect, great creativity, intellectual courage, and boundless curiosity. He was also a warm friend, always willing to comment on a paper, share an idea, and share a laugh together. I will always remember his generosity of spirit and will miss him. With sincerest condolences to Marci and his family, Eric Beinhocker

Herb and Marci were dear (and influential!) friends many years ago, in Cambridge. We haven't stayed in touch, but it's still hard to lose him. We remember him fondly.
