I have been living out of the country for the past 15 years. I know this is so late after his passing but on returning to St. Louis I learned that Dr. Haupt had passed. Used to work out with him at his gym. Wonderful person and brilliant surgeon. Condolences to the family.

I recently moved back to St. Louis after 15 yrs away and was looking to reconnect with Dr Haupt for my hip. Needless to say I was stunned by this news. He had worked on my knees back in the 80´s. My mom nicknamed him Dr. Bubbles for his suspenders and wonderful and cheerful demeanor.
I remember him wanting me to get another opinion due to my complicated case. But he offered his time for me to come back and discuss it and make a plan going forward even if he wasn´t doing the surgery. I didn´t know of anyone else that would offer to do that. He was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends, and regular patients. Hopefully my mom can meet up with him again now that she´s up there too.

I was in residency with Herb at Baptist Hospital. He was a hard worker and trusted colleague. My heartfelt condolences to all his family. I just saw this, and was stunned. Herb was the healthiest resident in the program. Isaiah 57:1 was a comfort to me when I lost a child. My prayers are with you.

Dr. Haupt was the best, taking care of our son when he had a torn shoulder from a car accident years ago. Our second son now has a shoulder injury and at 6am today, Dr.Haupt's name came to me as the one to see. I realize this is so late after his passing, but felt I needed to add condolences and many thanks for his help in making our son David well.

Dr Haupt and I were regulars at Mac's Gym in Des Peres back in the early 90's. When I tore the cartlage in my knee he did everything to accomidate me and did the scope surgery. My 20 yr old son, collegiate baseball player, now needs his shoulder looked at and Dr Herb was the first person I thought to contact. Absolutely can not believe the result of my search and almost refuse to believe it is possible. Great men like Dr Haupt deserve to live forever.

I just learned of Dr. Haupt's passing. I began my relationship with him as a patient but often spent time with him later in the workout room. He was an excellent surgeon and a very pleasant and thoughtful man. I'm very sorry to hear of his loss and send my deepest condolences to his family.

October 8, 2011

I can only add my condolences to Dr. Haupt's family. He did an ACL on my husband about 13 years ago. He was a brilliant surgeon and good man. I was saddened also that I only found out about his passing yesterday and my husband and I did not get the opportunity to pay our respect. God Bless him and his family. D. Hecht RN

What a wonderful man he was. He performed my knee surgery back in the 90's and I am just now having trouble due to over doing it playing kickball. I did a search to find him and pulled up his obituary. I am so sorry to hear that we have lost such a remarkable man. I feel saddened that I could not pay my respects a year ago. Be strong and proud that he was such a beautiful person inside and out!

February 28, 2011

Dr.Haupt was the best orthopedic man in St. Louis. He treated myself and many of the athletes I coach. He is remembered and missed.

Dear Family, Thanks so much for the guest book still being open. I am in awe of so many friends Dr. Haupt has. So many just finding out he is no longer with us. He will be missed forever. As we age, good physicians are hard to find. Think of you often and know what a great loss you have suffered. Ev STLF

Just learned of Dr. Haupts passing. I first met him when he did my son's knee surgery. Since then I had both of my knees done by him and have not had a bit of trouble. I learned of his passing, today as I was going to make an appointment for my husband. He was the best. Always took time to talk to his patients. He will be sadly missed by all . Jewel T.

I last saw Dr. Haupt at the VP Ball and he was in great spirits. Moments before I saw him, I complimented his wife on how wonderful she and her daughter looked that evening without knowing who they were. She asked me for directions to a spot in the hotel. As I left them and began to walk to the entrance of the hotel, I crossed paths with Herb and thanked him for such great work on my left knee, right knee and right shoulder which he healed wonderfully. Only a moment later did I discover the woman I had just complimented was Mrs. Haupt who was just behind me after greeting Herb. It was a funny and charming coindicidence that happened in just a matter of seconds. Herb's life I am sure was filled with wonderful and charming moments. I miss him very much and placed total confidence in his surgical prowess and bedside manner. My deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Haupt and her children. We miss you Dr. Haupt, you were absolutely the best.

I remember saying goodbye to Herb as he left our residency program at WFU-BMC, Winston-Salem. I was secretary II to Dr. Joe Nicastro, and had the pleasure of working with Herb for 4 or 5 years. He was always a gentleman, an excellent surgeon, and a pleasant spirit to work with. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. Godspeed, Herb. You will be missed. God comfort your family.

Herb has been my doctor since 1986 and has helped me over the years to deal with the ramifications of both the exuberance of youth and delusional middle age. I just learned of his passing today as I stopped in to schedule yet another appointment. I am very, very saddened by this news. He was the personification of a life lived to the full...and of someone who was full of life. I will miss him - not only as someone I knew to be a fine doctor and gifted surgeon, but as a friend. My prayers and condolences to his family. While his life's candle burned too quickly, it certainly burned brightest.

I meet Herb back in 1980 in Winston Salem NC at the ymca. He was a avid weight lifter and was always willing to help. I remember he told me about going to med school and how it was hard to work out and then go to school. He was training for a bodybuilding contest and told me when he was done all he wanted to do was lay on Myrtle Beach. He is with the Lord now and I will pray for the whole family for strength. Be Blessed in Jesus name.

I was a resident in neurosurgery at Wake Forest when Herb was a resident in orthopedics, so we interacted a great deal. I just read of his death in the Wake Forest Alumni Notes. Herb was a superb doctor and a great guy. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Please accept our deepest sympathies. I have been visiting Dr. Haupt for the past 5 years. It is a 3 hour round trip from my home to his office, I never minded the time on the road. Knowing Dr. Haupt made the drive more than worth while.

I first met Dr. Haupt in the mid '80s, in the OR at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield. He was a "new" doctor, so the team wasn't sure what to expect. He "wowed" us with his skill, confidence, and kindness to the patient AND the OR team!

Since the mid-1990's I've had the pleasure of working as an RN case manager. Dr. Haupt was a favorite of mine. He treated his patients with dignity and compassion, regardless of their circumstance. He was a great physician.

To the Haupt family and friends, may God shower his grace and mercy on you in these difficult days.

I will never forget all that he did for me and my family. He was a friend that I trusted emphatically. A man of true integrity, honesty, and spirit. When ever I saw him he would always say "hey big guy how are you?". He'll always be in my prayers and thoughts and will be sorely missed. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I was so sorry to hear about the loss to the Haupt family. I have known Dr. Haupt for many years and considered him a professional from word one. He repaired both my shoulders and a knee and I couldn't have asked for a better surgeon. I will miss his pleasant nature and funny stories. May God bless his family in these tough days ahead.

April 15, 2010

My prayers go out to his entire family. I was a patient of his. He treated my two boys and I for all our soccer injuries for many years. I recall one visit during the first winter after my knee surgery. He entered the room listened to my complaint of knee pain; he asked one question - what have you been doing lately?; I said not much since it is winter; he said that's your problem - get more active. I still laugh about that visit. He was an excellent surgeon and a good person. Again, my deepest sympathies.

He has impacted many memories and those memories will truly live forever.

I worked for Dr. Haupt back in 2001-2003 and his dedication to his patients and OA was well known. I recently crossed paths with him again at a different job and he was so excited to be helping the Haitian people after the earthquake. He had no idea of what conditions in which he would be living in, and treating patients in, but his sense of responsibility to those in need overshadowed his own discomfort. Condolences Melissa, Taylor and Blake. He was so proud of his family!

April 12, 2010

Dearest Melissa, Taylor and Blake as well as the rest of your families please except our heartfelt condolences and sadness as well as our over whelming shock at the loss of Herb. We will always remember him fondly with his straw hat either reading or fishing off 1st Avenue North Beach in Naples, Fl and his sun kissed smile as he and Melissa shared a story on the beach deck. Sunset somehow will never be the same.

I did not personally know DR. Haupt well. I met him from a distance a couple of times. But I know someone who knew him very well. My brother Dr. Barry Goldstein. I heard tremendously awesome things about this man. I can only say here I hope my beloved brother is there to meet and greet "Herb"..That place at the Orthopedic associates has been thru so very much. My heart and gratutide go to the family of Dr. Haupt and all the wonderful employees there.. It gives me a slight peace of mine to know my Bro well be grinning the barry smirk and welcoming over.. May God bless and watch over the family and all those dedicated people at the surgery center and orthopedic place..

Met Herb in 1986 when he did my first ACL reconstruction during my highschool yrs. He was my third opinion but I knew he was the one with his knowledge and confidence. Came back in 1993 for the other knee's ACL recon and everyday I am thankful for his friendship and talent. Still lead a very active life thanks to his orthopedic prowess. Saw him a couple years ago on a flight to Fl and he had not changed a lick. He sat right next to my family and held my youngest for a lot of the flight. What a great guy and loss for this community. I extend my deepest condolences to the family. Herb thanks a million for your assistance and friendship. RIP

April 12, 2010

My very deepest condolences go out to Melissa, Taylor, Blake and all his loved ones. I had the honor and privilege of working with Dr Haupt for just under a year. OA will never be the same without him. I am thankful that our last conversation was centered around the work he did in Haiti, that he knew the Lord and that I had a chance to thank him for letting the Lord use him in this way.
Dr Haupt, may your legacy of CARE live on in honor of you...

Dr.Haupt was an incredible man. He deeply cared about everyone. On his way to the surgery rooms he would have to pass my office. Every once in a while he would peek his head in an talk to me. He did that out of kindness. He never missed a chance of telling his employees how much we all meant to him. He definately took on the father roll at the surgery center. I will always remember the classy and sharp way he dressed. And from time to time I will still see him walk pass my office. My deepest sympathy goes out to you Melissa,Blake and Taylor. I will miss him so very much.

April 12, 2010

I met Dr. Haupt a couple years ago about my knee. I was referred to him by Cheri Fenton(my sister-in-law) who use to work for him. Since my injury was from martial arts the doc told me I'd just have to not kick so many people as hard(ha!). All side kidding my knees are great thanks to you Doc. What has impressed me the most is the legacy he is leaving behind---to think of others first and to always be your best at what ever you do in Life! My deepest sympathy to family and all that were touched by him.

April 11, 2010

I have so many memories to share . . . in part for me, as a way of saying goodbye, but primarily for Melissa, Taylor and Blake who never met the Herb I knew: the childhood friend, teammate, workout partner and college roommate.

How old were we when we first met? I’m not exactly certain, but we were teenagers – Herb a year younger than me and two years younger than my brother George. I remember the kindness of Mrs. Haupt, Gary a few years younger than Herb, and Dennis as a little boy.

I remember hot roding Herb's Rambler - baby blue I think and complete with 8-track tape player - on a waterskiing trip to the Haupt’s cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks. And despite the misguided sense of immortality that most teenagers share, I remember being more than a little nervous as we roared down winding two-lane roads. Even then Herb was confident in his own abilities. And even then I knew Herb’s confidence wasn’t misplaced.

I remember some of the awful color combinations Herb came up with before his sense of style matured. There was a pink sport coat, orange shirt and gold tie that he trotted out for a high school dance. Okay, I might be off on the colors but not the affect . . . not with that bright red hair!

I remember spirited debates when we were roommates. Literature or politics only – I wouldn’t have presumed to challenge his opinions in math or science. I remember parties with the television on, music blaring, friends talking and laughing, and I Herb studying – totally unphased by all those distractions. The most amazing powers of concentration I’ve every seen.

What I can’t remember is a time when Herb didn’t know that he would someday become a doctor. Nor can I remember him being more than momentarily discouraged when as a recent MU grad with a 4.0 GPA and great MCAT scores, he wasn’t accepted to medical school. He immediately launched into a brief but highly successful min-career with IBM before reapplying to medical school.

The rest is a history I know only as snapshots. My wife and I moved halfway across the country and the visits to St. Louis were much too infrequent – weddings and funerals mostly. I met Melissa at my niece’s wedding and saw Herb last at my mother’s funeral. I didn’t know, never thought, he would be gone so soon.

Thanks for your friendship, Herb, and for all the wonderful memories! God bless and keep you.

I am a physical therapist and have known Dr. Haupt for the past 15 years. Two years ago my younger brother died suddenly and I remember Dr. Haupt calling me and expressing his heartfelt condolences to me. He stepped out of his MD role and into one of a friend. I never will forget that conversation and the sincerity of his expressions. I wish all the Haupt family my deepest sympathy for a man whose life on earth ended way too soon.

Good bye to a friend and gym buddy for the last six years. You also helped me with two problems I had with my knee and wrist, both with 100% success. I was happy to learn that you knew the Lord as your saviour and we will meet again in that mansion in the sky. You left far too soon, and I was shocked to hear of your passing, even tho you are in a better place now.

April 11, 2010

I have been a patient of Dr. Haupt's since 1988. I had placed a call to him this past Tuesday and was waiting to hear back from him on Wednesday, when I got the sad news. After my ACL reconstruction I thought I would never play soccer again, but he said there was no reason I couldn't. I got to play another 15 years. I remember the day after my shoulder surgery he called and asked "Are we still friends"? He also did surgery on my mom's knees and shoulder. He was a good friend as well as a wonderful doctor. He really cared about his patients and never hurried you through an appointment. I believe he was very proud of the surgery center he opened and was so pleased when I told him about the personal care I received there. My mom and I send our sincere sympathy to his family, friends and staff. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

Sometimes, Trusting God is the hardest thing to do. This is one of those times. Having only known him through my son-in-law, we were in awe of him and his skills. It was a relationship way too short. It is one of the saddest days of our lives. Knowing that "someday" we will understand it better isn't helping much. We wonder how God could need him more than so many here on Earth. We just know ECC 3:1-2 There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven; 2) A time to be born and a time to die. That goes for all of us. Once I heard someone say...make sure when it comes to dying that is all you have to do. Knowing Doc knew the Lord is a consolation. He was always thinking Love God Help People like we learn at St Louis Family Church.

I met Herb the first day of Medical School 1976. He would be one of 3 other lab partners for two full years. He was the IBM guy, a little older than the rest of us, we would call him "Herbyte"...
Herb was always ahead of the game. While most of us lived in trailers and duplexes, he had a house. We drove Pintos and Vegas. Herb had a 4 door sedan with air conditioning. While we faltered over clinical rotations our 4th year, Herb was doing competitive bodybuilding. I still have a framed snapshot of us after graduation--- his best friends then, all grinning, in the med school parking lot, with the sun beating down. It seemed like the best time of our lives.
We lost touch thru the years. Practicing in Southeast Missouri, a shared patient once remarked how well he was doing: the orthopedic innovator, the entrepeneur, the sports pioneer...
If I could say something to him again, I would tell him what a wonderful time we had those years of med school, and that he had never been forgotten.
Rest in peace, Herbyte, my old friend. May the sun never stop shining on your eternal life. Ken Li MD

Over the past 19 years, Dr. Haupt has worked on my knees 5 different times. Not only did he physically get me back to everything I love to do, but the encouragement, warmth, gentleness, professionalism, and overall caring demeanor of this wonderful man was a gift that I was blessed to have experienced. I have not seen that depth from any of my other doctors. Thank you for caring, Dr. Haupt. Know you are a diamond in the rough, and always will be in our hearts. Sorry to hear about Herb. I remember lifting weights with him at Modern Fitness. Needless to say he was much stronger than I. One time he was doing dumbell presses on a decline bench with 120 lbs. The most I could do was 90 lbs (cant do it now) but watching him I figured I should try 95 lbs at least. With the second rep I lost control of the weight in my right hand and fortunately Herb caught it or I would have broken my arm. Just one small memory. Herb had a full life. Sorry to hear he passed on but it sounds like he passed quickly and painlessly. I hope so.

Dr. Haupt started helping our family when our middle daughter Kelly was 9...she's 25 now. Throughout those years, he has fixed 7 knees (no redo's, I might add!) Everyone has had at least one surgery by this great doctor and wonderful gentleman. Our youngest ,Katie, was to have had her month post surgery appointment Thursday, April 8. He meant so much to all of us and will be greatly missed. Our loss is heavens gain. Roger, Janet, Abbey, Kelly and Katie Gerlach, Sparta, Illinois

Although I did not know Dr. Haupt personally, as an employee of Missouri Baptist, his reputation preceded him. I am happy to know that Jesus Christ was his savior and he was assured of eternal life. Joan Hollinshead Kirkwood, MO

April 9, 2010

My deepest sympathy to your entire family! Herb has accomplished so very much in his life time. Living across the street from Herb"ie" where we grew up on Wylestone is filled with fond memories. I can still see Herb"ie" spending hours shining his 10 speed bicycle. In actuality, I think he was flurting with the neighbor girls. He often tried to teach me the game of pool with little success, bless his heart. Always remember that fond memories can never be taken away but rather used to fill the empty void in our hearts.
God Bless,

I recently watched the video from his Haiti mission trip and he was filled with such joy to be helping the Haitian people. I will always remember his "Care" speeches in the office. He wanted us to show "Care" to our patients and to our fellow employees and that will live forever at OA because he embedded that in us. My prayers and love are with his family, whom he loved very much. Dr. Haupt we will miss you and never forget you!

To the family,

Your Husband/Dad/Son/Brother was a sterling man, a wonderful doctor and an excellent human being. The world is a sadder place today for his not being in it.

I worked with Dr. Haupt at Orthopedic Assoc. from 1987 to 2005. One of my favorite memories is when the employees sent him a singing telegram for his 40th birthday. I think he was very surprised and embarrassed. He never forgave us for that. He will be missed by all whose life he touched, patients, friends and family. My love and prayers go out to Melissa, Blake, Taylor and also his OA family past and present.
