Herbert Luther Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2025.
Herbert Carl Luther passed away on May 1, 2025, in Caldwell, Idaho. Born on August 9, 1955, in San Jose, California, Herbert spent his formative years in La Grande, Oregon-a place that helped shape his lifelong dedication to service and craftsmanship.

Herbert proudly served in the United States Army for 13 years. His military career was marked by a wide range of roles including infantryman, wheeled vehicle mechanic, and power generator equipment repairer instructor. His technical acumen and commitment to excellence led him to co-author the official teaching manual for the military's power generator equipment repair school-a publication approved by the Department of Defense. His service took him across the globe with assignments in Washington, Korea-where he also studied Kung Fu-California, Germany, Colorado, and Virginia. He remained in Virginia until 2006 before returning to Idaho.

After his military service, Herbert continued applying his skills as a generator technician throughout Washington D.C. and surrounding areas. From government buildings like the Pentagon to local hospitals, his work ensured critical infrastructure remained powered and operational.

Herbert was a man of many talents and interests. He found deep satisfaction in working with his hands-whether it was repairing machinery, gardening with care and precision, or crafting projects from wood. Music was another passion; entirely self-taught on the piano, he brought joy to those around him with heartfelt renditions of Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and Beethoven's "Für Elise." Fishing held a special place in his heart as well-he loved sharing stories about it almost as much as he loved casting a line into quiet waters.

Above all else, Herbert cherished his family. He is remembered with love by his children: Jacob Carl Luther, Jason Scott Luther, and Crystal Pauline Luther; grandchildren: Rene' Earnest Luther, Tara Rose Luther, Brayden Mitchell Luther, Star Angel Luther, and Tessa Sue Luther; and great-grandchildren: Jensen Harley-Re' Morris, Daxten Liam Morris, and Oliver Finn Luther.

A storyteller at heart who valued independence and resourcefulness, Herbert left an enduring legacy through both his actions and words.

A funeral service honoring his life will be held on May 29, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery located at 10100 N Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise, ID 83714.

The Childhood family of...
Herbert, Herb, Herbie, or Carl, is colossal, widespread and extended with noteworthy layers.
-He loved and was loved.

His "heart" is the root foundation and is a treasure for all who loved him. There will be numerous versions of him through the lens of others.
-His journey was his to own

Losing a parent, a partner or a child is unquestionably heart crushing -Loosing a sibling has multiple layers of complexities and is understated in our society. Notably today, with misalignment on the rise in families.

No matter how you cut it, most often our siblings are the ones beside us during our raising. Along, with cousins too.
-Whether with memorable and laughable moments and/or multifaceted tragedies with or without solidarity. With mutual effort and well being they will share and evolve with us, throughout.

It is said,
When you lose a parent, you lose your past.
When you lose a child you lose your future.
When you lose a sibling, you lose your -past, present and future.

So long brother...

My brother was a very kind hearted man. Mother had 7 of us kids, myself being the oldest and Herb was next to the last of us. So I helped care for him in his youngest childhood years until he was 10 years old. I will miss our phone conversations and hearing him say, I love you too. May your good soul rest in peace and forever more.

He was an awesome man, I didn't know him that well. But he has a loving family that loves him very much. Good night my friend.
