ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Herbert McNeil Miller, 97, left this mortal world on Feb. 21, 2011.
Born in Buena Vista, Va., he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Julia Higgins Miller in 2002; his parents, John N. and Florence Slough Miller; and all eight of his siblings.
He is survived by three children, Marilyn Blanton of Dothan, Ala., Lenora Parker of Yorktown, Va., and Ronald (Mary-Ellen) Miller of Asheville, N.C., with whom he resided since 2004. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He resided for several years in Blackstone, Va., where he was a professional baseball player, and was employed by Bernstein Mfg Co. and The Mutual Insurance Co. In 1938, he moved to Newport News, Va., where he was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, from which he retired 38 years later. He helped build the award-winning luxury liners SS America and SS United States, and many Navy ships including the USS Yorktown, now permanently docked at Patriot's Point, S.C. He also helped build the USS Nimitz, a still active aircraft carrier, on which he had a great-grandson serve a tour of duty, and hydro-electric turbines for Hoover Dam.
A member of Trinity United Methodist Churches in both Newport News and Asheville, N.C., he was a member of the Adult Bible Class, past Chairman of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee, and past President of the Men's Fellowship.
He was also a past member and Chancellor Commander of Lodge 72 of The Knights of Pythias and the Grand Lodge of the State of Virginia, and also served as a Boy Scout Troop Scoutmaster.
Visitation will be at Peninsula Funeral Home on Warwick Boulevard from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 1. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the same location, followed immediately by burial.

I sure do miss you Grandpa. You were the best and i appreciate all of the great family get togethers over the years. He always greatly loved all of us grandkids and I personally always looked forward to seeing him. His great-great grandson Luke passed on about one week before Grandpa and I believe Grandpa when to take care of Luke. Love to all of the family as we will all greatly miss him.

I will miss Grandpa a lot. We always had the best holiday meals with Grandpa and Grandma and how we played out in his their big yard and garden and woods. Grandpa would stick out his stomach real big and tell us not to eat the watermelon seeds because that is what would happen to us if we did. Besides all the little things; I knew he loved us and I loved him and Grandma Miller. We both send are love and let him r.i.p. His granddaughter, Phyllis Parker Rowland and her husband Dan.

Ron and the entire Miller family. I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I have missed him so much since your mom passed and he moved in with you. The neighborhood has not been the same without them. Your dad used to make me laugh all the time. I have missed his wonderful smile. Your dad was the first person at my house when the rescue squad showed up when my dad passed away. Your mom and dad where always there for me when I needed them. I wish we stil had neighbors like we used to but not anymore.
May all the angles and saints be with you all in this time of need.
