Riband Herbert S., Jr. "Herb" Aged 84, of Fort Washington, PA, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, godfather, counselor, mentor and respected Philadelphia lawyer, passed away on January 9th, 2021 of complications from pneumonia. Herb was born in 1936 in Philadelphia, and subsequently attended LaSalle College High School, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He spent most of his professional career working as a trusts andestates attorney at the Philadelphia law firm of Saul, Ewing, Remick & Saul (now Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP), where he served on the Executive Committee and eventually retired as senior partner. Among other professional accomplishments, Herb played a leadership role in counseling and supporting many non-profit educational, artistic and healthcare organizations including Carson Valley School (which he helped to desegregate in 1967), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and the Penn Health Systems Institute for Diabetes. As Vice Chairman of the Board at PAFA, Herb was credited for his work as a lead negotiator for the team that successfully kept in Philadelphia Thomas Eakins' iconic painting The Gross Clinic, now shared by PAFA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Herb and his wife Leah also supported the Morris Arboretum, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts. He was an accomplished woodworker who forged a friendship with the renowned artist George Nakashima and drew inspiration from his craft. His varied experiences included serving as President of the Notre Dame Marching Band, a U.S.Army Reserve officer, cantor and choir director at St. Genevieve Church in Flourtown, and an active member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Fort Washington. He took great pleasure in gatherings with family and friends, travels around the world, scuba diving and cooking (primarily Italian cuisine). Herb is survived by his wife Leah (married 61 years), his son Herb and wife Jeanine, his son Anthony and wife Lisa, his two grandchildren Daniel and Michelle, and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his sister Mary Joan (Dunphy) and daughter Rosemarie. An online memorial service will be hosted by St. Thomas' Church in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any local non-profit artistic or cultural institutiondedicated to supporting the arts and making them accessible to the public, or to altruistic charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity-Philadelphia or the Carson Valley School.

As I had explained last year, Herb was my first mentor after having been diagnosed with type one diabetes in 1983...Herb could not have been more of a support and years later he accepted a invitation to join the Advisory Board for Diabetes at Penn Medicine where I also served ! What a wonderful human being who did so very much for others through his life ! He has also inspired me to mentor other recently diagnosed diabetics remembering how helpful he had been for me !

I am so sorry for your loss. I fondly remember having dinner at your home back in the 70’s. The wonderful conversation and my first exposure to classical music will always stay with me. Herb was always respectful and encouraging to me. I will forever miss Herb and Rose.
Love to all, Karen Herling-Simeone

I am so sorry to hear about Herbie's passing. He was a kind, brilliant, and respectable man. He had such an admirable inclination and knowledge of nature that he could have been a botanist. He knew humanity so well enough that he could have been a diplomat, and in many ways was also that. I loved hearing his stories about his family, affiliations, and "his" incredible trees at his home in Ft. Washington.

They don't make men like Herb Riband anymore.

My family and I send heartfelt condolences to his wife and children.

To Leah, Herb and Anthony and Families....So much to say about HSRjr. Worked at SER&S for many years as his legal secretary. He shared stories about his life, family and world travels and made me laugh over and over. It is with sadness and much respect I remember this gentleman.

He was always cheerful and had interesting stories to tell. Eddie could always count on him to be on the side of Notre Dame, specially vs Michigan.

I will always appreciate more than anyone would know, Herb’s guidance and support upon my being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes over 35 years ago ! He was such a wonderful mentor and example to me how to live well with the condition, without it limiting one’s life options ! I also much appreciate his joining the support group at PENN Medicine Diabetes board as an advisor, where he shared his experience and talents. One of the nicest men you will ever encounter...we will miss you Herb !

Dears Anthony and Lisa,
Please accept my condolences. I am honored to have known Herb and enjoyed working with him.
Thank you for being exemplary children and care takers. These are hard roles to assimilate.
I will be in touch more personally and privately.

Herb was the ultimate multifaceted Renaissance man. He was a highly respected lawyer, a consummate craftsman, a fine musician and an active supporter of the arts and the needy. He will be sorely missed.
