Herbert “Howard” Roy, age 93, of Seneca Rocks, WV passed away on January 17, 2023 at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg, VA. Mr. Roy was born in Harman, WV, on December 19, 1929, to Herbert and Carrie Roy. He grew up with his siblings, Joan Roy Teter (Carl), who preceded him in death, and Helen Roy Bennett (Herbert) who survives. Howard attended school in Harman where he had his mother as a teacher. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
When his military stint was finished, he returned home to marry Dottie Harman of Seneca Rocks on August 3, 1952. The couple moved to Maryland where Howard became the carpenter for the Washington Star. On July 4, 1961, the couple’s only son, Kevin, was born. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Howard, and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to loving his family.
As many couples of their generation did, Howard and Dottie returned home to West Virginia moving to Petersburg, where he became the carpentry instructor at the South Branch Vocational School while Dottie worked for the State of West Virginia. He was a member of the Petersburg Masonic Lodge #145 and a 32nd degree Mason.
After retiring from teaching, Howard spent most of his time on the family farm in Harman Hills surrounded by his dogs, cats, and cattle.
In addition to his wife of 70 years and his son, Kevin and daughter-in-law, Angel, he is survived by two grandchildren – Jamie Roy and Rachelle Roy and 3 great-grandchildren- Tyler, Kole, and Brynn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who were a big part of his extended family.
The funeral service will be private with a celebration of life at a later date. Burial will be at the North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton, WV. Memorials may be made to the Shriners at https://www.shrinersinternational.org/en Memories and words of comfort may be left at www.basagic.com or on Facebook at Basagic Funeral Home.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to Kevin, family, and friends. “Uncle” Howard was such a kind, caring, gentle soul, with a smile that could light up the world. I have fond childhood memories of spending the summers with him and “Aunt Dot”, working the farms, hunting deer, sitting down for delicious home cooked meals straight from the garden, and after a long hard days work sitting down in his recliner, kicking his feet up, and watching baseball with a cold one. One of my favorite memories was of when he brought me home a little stuffed elephant. It’s one of the first toys I remember ever being given. I still have it and cherish the memory to this day. Howard and Dot will forever be missed.

To the Roy Family
My deepest condolences to each of you with the passing of Howard.
I worked several years with him at the vocational center. I could always get a smile or a little laugh from him in passing. He was a generous man who gave many students money to buy a snack when the class went on break. He told my husband, John, that he couldn’t stand to see a student unable to buy a snack. The students adored him.

Dottie, Kevin and Family,
We were so sorry to hear that Howard had passed away. Howard was a caring and kind man, he will be missed by his family and many friends. I was blessed to have Howard for my Carpentry Instructor in 1978 & 1979, Co-worker, and one of my best friends. I always looked forward to his class in the afternoon, he knew his trade and was a great instructor. His passion was to pass his carpentry skills onto his students, he always greeted the students each day with a smile. My friendship with Howard began on my first day in his class, he was my teacher and my friend. We pray that God will continue to bless his family and friends during this time of great loss.
