COLUMBIA -- Dr. Herman L. Singletary, 85, formerly of Lake City, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Lexington.

Dr. Singletary was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Lake City, the son of the late Barfield Lamar and Edith May McWhite Singletary. He graduated from The Citadel in the Class of 1939 and received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1943. Following his graduation, he interned at the James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C. He entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps spending 27 months in service, 19 of which were spent in the European Theatre. In 1947, he opened his practice of general medicine in Lake City and practiced continually there for 31 years. He was a past President of the Pee Dee Medical Association. He was instrumental in the planning and realization of the Lower Florence County Hospital and served as its Chief of Staff and Chief of Emergency Room. He moved to Columbia in 1978 and served on the medical staff of the Ambulatory Care Clinic, Moncrief Hospital for eight years. At the time of his death, he was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. In Lake City, he was a member of the Lake City Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir there for many years.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Sharon S. and Ralston B. Vanzant of Columbia; son, Shawn L. Singletary of Columbia; grandchildren, Christopher R. and Meagan G. Vanzant of Greenville, Kevin S. Vanzant of Charlottesville, Va., and SarahAnn M. Vanzant of Columbia. Dr. Singletary was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, MarthAnn, on May 15, 2002.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today in Lake City Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Brozina and Dr. William Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Singletary Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at the Presbyterian Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lake City Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., Lake City, SC 29560; The Salvation Army, 2025 Main St., Columbia, SC 29201; or a charity of one's choice.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
