Hinton Battle Obituary
Hinton Battle was a three-time Tony Award-winning stage performer whose performances in "Sophisticated Ladies," "The Tap Dance Kid," and "Miss Saigon" won wide acclaim, and he originated the role of the Scarecrow in the Broadway production of "The Wiz."

I am so saddened to hear of Hinton´s passing. Although I only knew him for a short time, he was a pivotal person in my life and career choice. I first met Hinton at the National Theatre in Washington, DC, where he was performing in "Dancin´". I was in high school at the time, working as an usher. My mother was a regular cellist in the pit orchestra. I was aspiring to become a professional stage manager, so often hung out backstage after the show as my mom was wrapping up. I was mesmerized and inspired by Hinton´s dancing and singing. His skill, remarkable grace and agility, and his ability to translate story and emotion through movement and gesture simply captivated me night after night . He was so talented, but also very kind and friendly to me, always willing to take time for meaningful conversation. He was even kind enough to stay in touch for a few years after the show left DC. I don´t remember when or how we communicated, but I followed his career for several years, and then lost touch. Please accept my deepest condolences for your family´s loss. Hinton was a rare treasure of a human, a fleeting but critical mentor to me in the magical world of theatre. I will always remember him fondly. I hope to meet you all someday. I am so sorry about the loss of Hinton - his amazing voice will never be forgotten. The Battle family has my deepest condolences and I pray that you will be surrounded continuously with love and support & as you go through this difficult time, may Almighty God give you "everlasting comfort" (2 Thess. 2:16).

Hinton was the godfather of my children and my x-husband´s best friend. I really got to know Hinton well when he was in Chicago starring in Ragtime and then again for a one-man show on his life. He was always warm, engaging, insightful and kind. One of my fav memories was dancing with Hinton at a wedding. A Tony-award winning professional dancer and clumsy me. But like everything else in his life, he made it joyful and his polish shined bright enough to cover my total lack of polish. He was an amazing person. He may have played a demon on Buffy, but he is dancing with the angels now. May his memory be a blessing.
