Hope Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 23, 2008.
EAST ORLEANS — Hope T. Davis, 92, died in her beloved home, "Bali," on Nov. 20, 2008.

She was born Hope Constance Moldstad on Oct. 27, 1916, to parents Rev. Christian A. Moldstad and Stephanie E. (Biewend). She was baptized and confirmed by her father into the Lutheran faith.

Raised in both Boston and Minneapolis, Minn., she summered on the Cape at her parents' cottage, "Beach Manse," in Brewster, where she gained a passion for sailing and swimming. She graduated from Bethany Lutheran high school in Mankato, Minn., in 1934. After high school, Hope worked, among other jobs, as "The Story Lady" at a local Boston radio station. For a number of summers, she helped to run the family cottage as an inn.

Hope loved to dance, which is how she met her husband, Barton J. Thompson. They were married on June 12, 1943, and made their home in Cohasset with their five children. While living there, because of her love for flowers, Hope became an active member of a flower club and many other organizations.

After the death of Bart, Hope continued to make her home in Cohasset until she married George A. Davis on May 22, 1971.

Hope and George were active members of various yacht clubs and organizations. Hope loved sailing on their yacht, "Explorer," where they often entertained family and friends. She was instrumental in building Trinity Lutheran Church, which she dedicated to her father. She and George made their home at "Bali" in East Orleans.

After George's death, Hope split her time between the Cape and Florida. After a few years, she returned to live full time at Bali, where she stayed until her passing.

Her caring and generosity throughout her life touched and helped many people.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands and one daughter, Jillian J. (Thompson) Cullen, as well as by her brother, Arden B. Moldstad, and two sisters, June (Jay) A. Moldstad and Roba D. (Moldstad) Hause. She is survived by a son, G. Milton Thompson and his wife, Susan Paige, of Scituate. She also leaves daughters Adele Bloomfield of Exeter, N.H., Melissa Diamondstein and her husband, Mark, of Greensboro, N.C., and Faith Thibault and her husband, David, of Conway. Additionally, she is survived by her nephew, Charles Moldstad and his wife, Judy, of Brewster, and her niece, Valerie (Hause) Hayes and her husband, Bryan, both of Tracy, Minn., and Brewster. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, as well as one great-nephew and two great-nieces.

Visitation will begin today, Sunday, Nov. 23, at 1:30 p.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Brewster, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Brewster Cemetery in the family plot.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1883 Main St., Brewster, MA 02631.
