Hope Foye Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 20, 2025.
The remarkable life of Hope Foye-a pioneering trilingual singer, activist, teacher, and extraordinary spirit who lived and performed across Mexico, Europe, and Israel-came to a peaceful conclusion on January 6, 2025, when she passed away at home, at the age of 103, in Henderson, Nevada.

Born Margaret Frances Hope Wainwright in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1921, Foye broke barriers as one of the first African American opera singers. As a teenager, she earned a scholarship to the prestigious Hartt School of Music in Hartford. Her talent and ambition led her to audition for the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, but she was heartbreakingly denied the opportunity when a talent scout refused to hear her upon discovering she was Black. Undeterred, Foye was introduced to Barney Josephson, the visionary impresario behind Café Society, one of New York City's first integrated nightclubs, where legends like Billie Holiday and Lena Horne launched their careers. Performing at Café Society, Foye became a fixture in New York's vibrant music scene, appearing in the Broadway musical Dance Me a Song and singing alongside Pete Seeger and the Weavers.

Foye's activism was as prominent as her artistry. Passionate about civil rights, she became involved in causes advocating for equality and justice. She crossed paths with renowned figures like Langston Hughes, Adam Clayton Powell, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Robeson, with whom she shared the stage at Madison Square Garden. She gained international recognition after winning a singing prize at the World Youth Music Festival in East Berlin. Her participation in a fundraising concert for the Civil Rights Congress in Peekskill, NY-a precursor to the Civil Rights Movement-brought her to the attention of the McCarran Committee during the McCarthy era. Blacklisted and stripped of her U.S. passport, she faced significant professional and personal challenges.

Foye responded to this adversity by relocating to Mexico, joining a growing community of artistic expats. During her ten years in Mexico, she became fluently bilingual in Spanish. She graced the country's most prestigious concert halls, hosted her own television program, and formed friendships with luminaries such as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco.

In 1962, the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated her passport, enabling her to embark on a new chapter in Europe. Awarded a grant to study at the Opera House in Zurich, Switzerland, she later performed with the Israeli Opera Company in Tel Aviv, appearing in productions such as The Marriage of Figaro. Foye's career continued in West Berlin, where she studied advanced vocal techniques, performed with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and toured as Bess in a German production of Porgy and Bess . She also contributed as a voice and language coach for the German production of Hair.

In 1978, Foye returned to the United States, settling in San Pedro, California. She continued performing and began teaching voice at the Los Angeles Inner City Cultural Center. While pursuing her passion for education, she earned a bachelor's degree from Immaculate Heart College and became a sought-after vocal coach, mentoring aspiring singers and actors. Her enduring artistry was honored when Union Bank sponsored a Black History Month CD featuring her work.

Hope Foye's life was an odyssey-a journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim. As a singer and activist, she embodied resilience, optimism, and a steadfast commitment to sharing her light with the world.

She is survived by two daughters, Melody Woolley of Henderson, Nevada, and Datri Kory of Maui, Hawaii; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many loving extended family members and friends. A celebration of her extraordinary life will be held in April at The Palos Verdes Unitarian Universalist Church.

Hope was my patient while I was in dental school. I think of her often. She was a patient I looked forward to seeing, she had great stories and wisdom to share. I thought of her today and searched her name and found her obituary. I am sorry to hear of her passing. She was a wonderful woman and inspiration to me in my journey to becoming a dentist. I send my condolences to her daughter, Melody, and all of her family.

I met Hope when she was 72 and living overlooking the water in San Pedro. She gave me voice lessons. She was fascinating. Once I took her and my 9-year-old son and his rambunctious 9-year-old friend to see The Nutcracker in Long Beach. She was a trooper!

I was so blessed to have met Hope when she and Melody moved in across the street from me In Henderson. I marveled at her beauty and grace. When I learned about her life, I knew that God had graced me with her friendship. Mamacita, rest in peace in the arms of the Lord and all his angels. May your memory be eternal.

Hope and Melody were neighbors of mine in Henderson, Nevada. Many of the ladies in the community became friends and had several get-togethers where we were captivated by Hope's stories. Melody would give us a head's up that Mamacita would be a bit late because she wanted to select the right outfit and make an entrance! She was worth the wait--so elegant and dripping with style and class!
I sometimes came to sit with Hope. We would soak up the political news on her favorite channels while she added some opinions of her own. She was so sharp and up on everything--and that was in her late 90's!
It was a sad time when Melody announced that she and her mother would have to leave our community. Melody was such a wonderful daughter to Hope. They settled not far from the area, so we got to visit occasionally. I was there to unpack and the best part was when Melody needed help with arranging the family pictures, along with Hope's personal collection. What a life she lived! What a gift she left us--an amazing daughter, our friend, Melody.

I was truly blessed to be in relationship with Ms. Hope, a truly gifted social activist that made a significant impact in the world through her profession. She was vibrant, joyful and such a delight, generally leaving me laughing with my every encounter with her. I am thankful that I was able to visit her once more in August of last year. I met Ms. Hope at the Mayme Clayton Library (picture below) when her story was shared and she participated in a Q&A with the audience. She also performed, accompanied by a cello ensemble. Upon learning her story, which involved her being blacklisted during the McCarthy era, I desired to ask her if she would be willing to speak at my son's high school to his 11th grade class, as they had recently performed the play, The Crucible. She was willing and this was the beginning of an 11-year friendship. She also spoke to youth and their families that I served in 2014 and 2019 at my place of work. Both times she had everyone (ages 5 to 75) captivated, encouraging them about who they could be and how they could impact their world. I will treasure the times that I spent with her in San Pedro going on Trader Joe's runs or picking her up to go to a cultural event, where she would become the hit of the event! I am also thankful for our visits with her and Melody in Henderson and got to see Datri on occasion. God bless you Melody and Datri for your loving care for your mother that she lived to 103. Thank you for sharing Mamacita with all of us, as we came to love all of you! Praying for your continued comfort and strength. Love, Rhonda

My lord, what a pleasure it was meeting Hope through a friend in 2014. My first time meeting her I was in awe as she recounted stories of meeting Lena Horn, Paul Roberson, Earth Kit, Billie Holiday, & other well known black historical figures. I must have asked her 50 questions about varies people and events of the past, and thinking back, I must have seemed like a pesty brat, but it didn't seem to bother her. I later introduced my mother, and two additional friends to her, and like me, they were awed by her stories of the many people, and experiences she had lived. We stayed in touch a bit once she moved to Las Vegas, but the Covid shutdown pretty much interfered with our communication, and I was left to depended on reports from the friend(Gail) who introduced Hope to me, on how she was doing. She will be sorely missed!

It was a miracle that I met the so talented and wonderful person, Hope Foye. I was at some event and I just happened to start a conversation with Hope and asked her, "what is your name?" When she said Hope Foye, I said. "my name is Janice Foy!" Wow, what a connection we made and eventually I put together a concert with her as our fabulous singer doing a program with the music that featured a large 'cello ensemble. I believe we were also celebrating her birthday too. I will never forget the beautiful music we made together and how everyone so appreciated what they heard and her amazing story, as well. You will be so missed my dear friend. Thankfully, memories are forever.

Hope was mesmerizing to watch perform. I was brought to tears more that once upon hearing her singing and her vocal interpretation of songs. She has a spirit of giving and grace of herself and music and was fierce in her convictions and dedication to civil rights. As a dear friend of her daughters, I was privy to see and be around her for many occasions for multiple decades. She is loved and cherished by many. I am honored to have known her and been engaged in a part of her life.

Hope was a remarkable soul, one who graced the world with her immense talent, boundless intelligence, and impeccable sense of style. As an accomplished opera singer, I had the opportunity to listen to her voice on tape that left me in awe.

I met Hope when I moved to PVS; I was so impressed not only with her musical talent but that she also possessed a rare mastery of languages as well as an appreciation for cultures and people.

And then there was her style-unmatched, bold, and entirely her own. Hope was a true fashionista, someone who didn´t just wear clothes but transformed them into statements of individuality.

Hope was a Phenomenal Woman , she was, and will always be, a true masterpiece. Rest in peace, dear Hope.

We have all been so lucky to have known Hope. She has touched many lives, both on stage and off. Many of the details of her career I never knew. But that didn´t really matter because I knew her heart and to me that was the most amazing thing about her. After what she overcame in her life to then keep her heart open and full of hope for a brighter future for all of us to live in harmony with each other and transcend our differences with love. She was truly one of the most remarkable persons I have had the pleasure and honor to have been considered her friend.
