Horace LANDRIAULT Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Jul. 28, 2012.
LANDRIAULT, Horace Joseph
February 3, 1925 - July 13, 2012
Although he was christened Horace Joseph, our dad went by Joseph or more affectionately "Joe" to his friends and family. He passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre in Ottawa, where he received exceptional care for the past three years. A special thanks to his caregiver Elena, and also to Juliette, Mia and all of the medical staff at the Perley.
Joe was born in North Bay, Ontario, son of Omar Landriault and Amanda (nee Laflamme), brother to Bernadette (predeceased), Leonard (predeceased), Jean-Paul (predeceased), Theresa (predeceased), Sister Rita (predeceased), and his best mate Victor. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the air force and was shipped overseas towards the end of WWII. After the war he moved to Ottawa where he earned a Commerce degree from the University of Ottawa.
In 1949 he married Diane (nee Ringuette), Lady Di to her family. Joe and Diane would have been married 63 years this September. They had five daughters - Suzanne, Yvonne, Denise (Rocky), Jo-anne and Pauline. His career in the army led to many moves, starting in Churchill, Manitoba followed by Quebec City, Camp Borden, Kingston (where he attended Staff College for 2 years) and finally Ottawa. He was very proud of his military career and attained the level of Major. While in Ottawa he transferred from the military to the Federal Public Service where he enjoyed another very successful 25 year career, ending as ADM Human Resources at HRDC. After retiring from the Public Service he spent another 15 years working firstly for the World Bank in Manila for five years, then three years at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and finally seven years with the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development in London, England.
Upon returning to Ottawa from his last posting, he spent his days with his brother and best friend "Vic" golfing, playing pool and skiing in the winter as part of the Silver Bullet gang at Edelweiss. He also loved to go to the movies and was an avid sports fan his entire life.
We will remember Joe's hearty laugh, always ready for a party. He would do anything for his daughters of whom he was very proud, nothing was ever too much. In particular he was the best taxi driver ever. He was grandpa Joe to nine grandchildren, Tara (Dan), Katie (Aaron), Stephane (Sarah), Patrick, Marie-Anne, Philippe, Dominic, Audrey and Stephanie and great-grandpa to 8 month old Georgia . He never complained, even in later life when he was afflicted with one challenge after another - he was a trooper to the end.
A memorial service will be held on August 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in Lupton Hall at the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre, 1750 Russell Rd., Ottawa, ON.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to CNIB or the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre.
