Horst Siegel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 12, 2024.
We regret to inform you that on September 2nd, 2024 Horst Emil Siegel, the unofficial "Mayor of Lincoln Square," hung up his mayoral sash and said his final "auf Wiedersehen" at age 84. Born on November 7, 1939, in Sudetenland, Horst waltzed into this world with a twinkle in his eye and a knack for turning strangers into friends. His journey from the cradle to his well-worn barstool in Lincoln Square was one filled with the kind of adventures that would make even the most interesting man in the world raise his glass in respect.

Horst owned Siegel's Quality Optical and Winner's Sports Bar. He also served in the US Army. Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, Horst was a beacon of joy and companionship, often seen making his "rounds" through the neighborhood. One of his favorite stops was the Niedersachsen Futbol Club. Here he was admired as a long-time member, player, and great contributor to its continuous growth. He was deeply proud of his German heritage and put this into action through his support of various organizations.

Known for his radiant and warm personality, Horst's presence was akin to sunlight, touching lives with his laughter and wisdom. His daily interactions were sources of enrichment and joy for those who surrounded him, embodying a spirit that many aspired to emulate.

Horst lives and laughs through his existing family, including his daughters Gabrielle Pawelko, Michelle (Jeff) Johnsen, Natalie (Kyle) Gammonley, Dominique Siegel and Monica Winkhardt, his niece Isabell Siegel and nephew Juergen Siegel, grandsons Matthew Pawelko, Jonathan Pawelko and Parker Gammonley, beloved nurse and caretaker, Finna Reyes. He joins the great after-party in the sky, where his mother Hedwig, father Franz, and brother Guenther are surely waiting to clink glasses.

At Horst's request, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made directly to DANK Haus Chicago, honoring his lasting impact on the community. Another charity that was dear to him is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. We'll miss you, Horst, but we're pretty sure wherever you are, the bars never close and the laughter never ends.

Our Papa and Horst were friends through the German clubs before I was born. Our families loved on the same block. Horst was like another dad to me and I always enjoyed seeing him throughout the years. He always had a smile on his face and a big hug and kiss ready to give. So many great memories from the Niedersachsen picnics. On the weekends he picked up Gabi and Michy, they would all stop by our house like extended family. Rest in peace and I hope you are having a beer with Papa. Watch over your girls. You will be missed.

To many of you, Horst was a friend, a neighbor, a business associate, the Mayor of Lincoln Square, etc., but to my family and I, he was the best uncle a kid could have. Our memories of Horst are always with a smile on his face and a jolly attitude that was very contagious. He lived his life to the absolute fullest and he did so his way. We never saw him in a bad mood or mean spirited to anyone. He was always so good to us Kelemen kids, my mother and father. No one can say that this man did not fight his whole life and every step of the way, especially when he got sick. Our last few visits were just spent making him laugh and him making us laugh. 84 years was not enough but we know that he is with Muti (not sure of spelling,) Franz, Bibbi, our father George and Gabrielle and Mishy's stepfather, Sepi, all holding up their glasses and drinking to each other. Horst will always be a part of our lives and will never be forgotten. We love and loved him so very much! Sue Kelemen

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Horst Emil Siegel. Though I only had the privilege of meeting him a few times, it was clear that he was full of life and had a gift for bringing joy to everyone around him. Whether we were talking politics, sharing a few beers, or simply enjoying each other's company, he always made those moments memorable. Horst was truly the life of the party, and his absence will be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. My thoughts and condolences go out to you and your family during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Horst & his family started as someone we started as medical professionals but soon could not resist succumbing to his charm becoming friends of the family.

Life challenges were just a bump in the road to the destination of "celebration of life".
Will miss the brightness he shared with those around him
