It has been an extremely long time since our days together traveling and playing AAU/Classics basketball games, but that doesn't lessen the sadness we feel for your loss. Mr Blume was a wonderful person! Our deepest sympathies during this difficult time!

Dear Blume Family,
I was so saddened by the news of Howard's passing. He made such an imprint on me at a very young age when he invested his time with me as a young runner at Eastern Jr. High. He then moved on to be my swim coach at Northwood HS. I will always be grateful...he will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Blume Family. I had the honor to be coached by Howard while attending Montgomery College from 1980-1982. He was a special person and I will fondly remember the good times we all had together. I was finally able to reconnect with Coach several years ago and had a wonderful conversation with him. How proud he was of his children! Great man. Will miss him. I have attached a photo of some of the Montgomery College swimmers in 1981 at a "Joke Award Nite" at his house. I do have more... please email me and I'll scan and send several others. I'll miss you Howard!!!

Meryl -
I am truly sorry for your loss. Howard was my coach for 4 years, but he gave me the opportunity to find a passion that I did not know I had. He gave me a chance to be a leader and I took it in stride and it has since shaped my life and made me a better person. Everything I based my coaching and my swimming knowledge stemmed from him seeing potential in me that I did not. Howard became more than a coach, but a friend during and beyond the 4 years my brother was his swimmer alongside him at meets and feeling like he saw me as an equal, albeit decades his junior. I apologize for not being able to pay the respect he is due in person, and I hope that you and your family stay strong. With fond memories and a heavy heart,
Rahul Gandhi

Dear Blume Family,
We are so grateful to Howard for his amazing contribution to the swimming arena, in particular his devotion to the Wootton Swim Team and his acceptance of our son, Andy, on the team. Andy loved talking with Howard at the early practices and enjoyed seeing him in the Giant. Howard welcomed us to the swim family and we enjoyed every minute of it. He is leaving a legacy of fine swimmers. The pool decks will be too quiet without him there. Our prayers are with you. Jean, Phil and Andy

Howard was my friend for almost 40 years and I don't believe in that time that I ever met anyone more decent and down to earth. He literally would give you the shirt off his back. He was always upbeat and fun to be with. And, of course, always had a story to tell you. It was an honor to be his friend and I will miss him. Our thoughts are with Meryl and his children.

To the family of Howard L. Blume: We don't always have to know a family to have empathy for them when they lose a loved one in death. I wish to express my condolences as you endure this great loss. Also, our loving heavenly Father is the "God of all comfort" and he can and will help you through this difficult period because "he cares for you".

Howard and I were friends for almost 40 years and I don't believe I've ever met a person more decent and caring than him. He was the classic example of a person willing to give you the shirt off his back. Always upbeat, outgoing and fun to be with. I will miss him. To Meryl and the kids we share your loss and will be in our thoughts and prayers. It was an honor to call Howard my friend.

Dear Coach Blume,
I know the entire MCPS Swimming and Diving community mourns your loss. You were such a passionate coach, who always took the time to talk to parents and athletes. We were on a competing team, but you always had positive things to say about our son. May your memory be eternal.
