BRENNER--Howard. Of Newton, MA, age 84, February 17, 2014. Born in the Bronx, NY, March 16, 1929. Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at MIT who led an extraordinary 60-year academic career. Dedicated scholar and prolific author who received numerous honors and awards recognizing his profound contributions to the field of fluid dynamics, including election to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. Loving husband of Lisa Glucksman. Beloved father of Leslie (Stephen) Lipschultz, Joyce (John) Hagen-Brenner and Suzanne Brenner (John Opferkuch), his children with wife, Lorraine Brenner. Cherished grandfather of Margo, Alex, Daniel, Julia, Kiera, Max and Miles. Brother of Renee Gould. A memorial service will be held at MIT in the fall. Gifts may be directed to the Howard Brenner Memorial Fund at MIT. Checks may be sent to: MIT ASO, c/o Teri Quill, 8-328, 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge MA 02139.

I only met Howard recently during his recurring visits to Los Alamos. I enjoyed several interesting discussions with him, always provoked by his keen intuition and his expansive knowledge of relevant experiments. I had looked forward to many more such discussions and am saddened by his passing.

Howard will always be remembered as my mentor and role model during my graduate studies at NYU. Recently we reconnected after many years and shared our heartfelt feelings for each other. He and I will always be connected through the joint authorship (Goldman, Cox, Brenner) of his most cited paper. I cherish the years we spent together.
