Hello Whent family. For some reason, Howard came to mind (160202) and I Googled him today. Last saw him in the winter of either 79-80-81, when he brought your family to Thunder Bay to go skiing and I was a student at Lakehead taking a day on the hills. Couldn't miss that unique red hairstyle of his when I called out "Howard Whent!" and he looked at me quizzically. "Howard, I was one of your Grade 5 students at Alexandra Public School in Lindsay" (69-70) - and everything came to his memory, and on we went from there. Truly, a nice guy with a subtle sense of humour, who remains one of my favourite teachers. There is a heavenly hope, in that Christ died - so that if we turn to Him, we can have eternal life of peace and joy in heaven, and a relationship with Him now (Romans 10:13, John 3:3). May that hope, may that reality, be yours, and sustain you and your families.

Several years ago Howard was a member of the Lake Superior Binational Forum, representing eastern Lake Superior. The Forum wanted to make the 3rd Sunday in July "Lake Superior Day". Howard was instrumental in getting the Ontario government to recognize the 3rd Sunday in July as "Lake Superior Day". (Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota also celebrate Lake Superior Day. Thank you, Howard.

He was my 4th grade teacher and I could not have asked for anyone better. It was surreal to attend a tourism seminar with him 30 years later, and call him mister, and he said call me Howard. He was a great Teacher. Thank you Mr. Whent!

Mrs. Whent and children,
I am sorry to see that Howard has left us. He was a good man and contributed much to his community and his fellowmen. His love of the north and especially of Wawa and area was evident to all who knew him. He believed in the future of the area and seemed to have unlimited energy to work for his community.
He will be missed by all of us, but I believe he has left his mark on this world.

I'm thankful I got to spend quality time with Howard during his tenure as a Canadian representative on the Lake Superior Binational Forum. He always came to meetings well-prepared and gave thoughtful and wise insights into Lake Superior issues and economic development. He was very proud of Wawa and his connection to that fine community. I will miss his intelligent mind and playful stories. My thoughts go to his family and all who feel the pain of his loss.

I remember when Howard was born. I knew his Mother and Dad and brother well - Blue's Island being just out from our camp on Picnic Lake. We were fellow warriors against wind turbines along the Superior coast. I'll miss those meetings at Montreal River. Howard was always friendly and thoughtful. Brian Mealey

Mrs. Whent and Family,
We were very saddened to hear that Howard had passed away. Just last fall, I was pleased to hear from Howard when he called to advise that he had moved to the Soo. I enjoyed working with Howard during the political phase of his life while he served on City Council in Wawa. I appreciated being invited to Wawa in September 2010 by Howard to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the final Ontario link of the Trans Canada Highway.
It is with fondness that I remember Howard particularly his enthusiasm and passion for the community of Wawa.
May he rest in peace.
With our condolences,
Lou and Sandra Turco

One thing is for sure, Howard had a passion for Wawa! I've never met a person with so much pride for the history of a community. This is indeed sad to hear. I loved listening to his long and detailed stories when we worked together on the 50th Anniversary celebrations there. He spent countless hours with me at the Curling Club building his landscape and the finished product was so detailed. He sure was proud of it. He told me stories of teaching students over the years. I sure learned a lot from him over those couple of years. I am glad he is no longer suffering. He is fondly remembered by many and was so very proud of his children. Best to all of you in this difficult time.

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.
May you find strength
in the love of family
and in the warm embrace
of friends.
