Howard Haas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2025.
Howard "Buzz" Haas, 79, of Readfield, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 20, 1945, to Howard and Elizabeth Haas.

Buzz was a proud member of IBEW Local 1253 and built a distinguished career as an electrician and electrical technician. His work took him to remarkable places, including Steamboat Resorts in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Most recently, he applied his skills at Kent's Hill in Readfield, Maine, where he maintained electrical systems and operated the ski lift.

Buzz found joy in lakeside living and embraced a variety of hobbies that reflected his love for the outdoors and craftsmanship. He enjoyed skiing, canoeing, remodeling projects, and refinishing furniture. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.

He is predeceased by his parents, Howard and Elizabeth Haas, and his son-in-law, Bill Hiatt. Buzz is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Betty Lou Haas of Readfield, Maine; his sisters Sandy Sorensen of Golden, Colorado, and Heather Haas of Honolulu, Hawaii; his daughters Michelle Hiatt of Denver, Colorado, and Jennifer Hopkins and her husband Barry Hopkins of Winslow, Maine; and his beloved grandchildren Autumn Houck and her husband Jesse Houck of Monmouth, Maine; Sierra Swett and her husband Benjaman Swett of Washington, Maine; and Quinn Hiatt of Boulder, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harold Alfond Cancer Center or Andwell Hospice in honor of Buzz's memory.

Buzz will be remembered for his dedication to his craft, his love for adventure and family, and the joy he brought to those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.

A celebration of life for Buzz will be held this summer.

Having arrived in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in the summer of 1978 to take a job at an area power plant, I had the good fortune of becoming Buzz and Betty Lou's next door (condominium) neighbor. I met Betty Lou upon checking in and she was quick to tell me that Buzz was an electrician also, was working at the power plant, and would look forward to meeting me when he arrived home. It was my first time "on the road" as a journeyman electrician and Buzz took me under his wing, invited me into his car pool and introduced me to many of our fellow electricians. Buzz, being an expert woodsman, introduced me to the world of safe backcountry off-roading, cross country skiing, and gave me pointers on downhill skiing as well. It was a pleasure to have been a friend of yours and I'll always cherish the memories. RIP my friend...

Buzz or as sometimes we call him up Kent´s Hill, Buzz Matic, Sparky
was a great asset to the maintenance department. Buzz was a good friend and a great employee. Always keeping our electrical department meet and tidy and stock so we always had it when we needed it. Buzz will be missed, but always remembered.

Buzz was a gentle, warmhearted man yet strong and determined when he needed to be. I was blessed to call him friend and family. You are loved. Cathy
