Howard Michaels Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2023.
Present-day Founder of the Fly Creek Cider Mill and 5th Generation Cooperstownian Dies.

Howard Charles Michaels, known affectionately as Charlie, died August 26, 2023, following a brief illness. He was 89.

Born and raised in Cooperstown he graduated from Cooperstown High School then enlisted in the US Army, serving in the signal corps during the post-war occupation of Germany.

Honorably discharged, he joined New York Telephone automating switchboards and spent off hours enjoying Otsego Lake while entertaining aboard the Alkies Away. A chance meeting while skiing at Mt. Otsego introduced him to Barbara Yuenger and they were married in 1962. They settled in Fly Creek, where Charlie's career path evolved into carpentry.

He joined the Neilson Corporation as a union carpenter building Bassett Hospital and Hartwick College. He worked for Harris Clark building Cooperstown's Woodland Museum then became an independent contractor specializing in home renovations, particularly kitchens, and leaving his mark on numerous Otsego Lake camps.

Charlie and Barbara's shared entrepreneurial spirit shone as they painstakingly restored and expanded the old cider mill on their property. What started as a modest endeavor transformed into a beloved agritourism destination, where they pressed apples and created cherished memories with visitors. Their hard work and dedication to the Fly Creek Cider Mill has created a lasting legacy.

In the winter months, Charlie and Barbara lived in Park City, Utah, enjoying the famous powder snow and developing many friendships. They continued with winters in Mesa, AZ, fostering new connections and enjoying the warmth of the desert.

Upon retirement, Charlie and Barbara embraced new adventures, moving to Camp Red Roost on Canada Lake. There, Charlie loved his workshop, and maintained the camp while tending to his collection of apple parers and planes. He relished his days on the Nick Stoner Golf Course and the camaraderie of the 19th hole.

As an avid deer hunter, Charlies traveled to Canada, where he bagged his prized buck. Closer to home, he enjoyed a lifetime of hunting seasons on the east side of Otsego Lake, Bed Bug Hill, and at the Wedocandors in the Adirondacks. As a life-long skier and proud member of the National Ski Patrol, Charlie was known for his smooth form and tight cristies and explored many mountains in North America and Europe.

Charlie is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Francine (Warren) Hoffman, his sons H. William Michaels and Richard (Kimberly) Murphy, grandchildren Arthur and Jane Hoffman, H. Henry and Sadie Michaels, and great-granddaughter Serenity Hoffman. He is predeceased by generations of the Michaels and Simmonds families of Cooperstown.

In accordance with his wishes, private services will be held, and Charlie's resting place will be Lakewood Cemetery, as well as the cherished landscapes of Canada Lake, Bedbug Hill, and the great North Woods.

Charlie leaves behind memories of fun and adventure, an empty glass, no untracked powder and a few lucky deer.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral home. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy can be made with the Friends of Bassett.

I missed the first Apple & Tractor Fest But was at all of them to the end. Charlie and I hit it off the first time we met, the tractor fest was great, and we had fun with the old tractors even when Charlie ran out of gas on our short ride and had to be pulled back, what a ribbing he got, but he got back when my tractor would not start. Charlie and I had the honor with our tractors of escorting Phill Downs final ride to the cemetery, He was proud of his apple peeler collection, and we spent more time than we should have going on over his collection. I always enjoyed some of our pranks at the fest and barb always laughed at them. Our small group of tractor collector's that exhibited at the tractor fest is getting smaller and smaller, but we have the memories that will last forever. Charlie and Barbara were one of the greatest and friendliest couple I have ever met and they have a very special feeling in my heart especially every fall when it's apple time, RIP. you're both in Heven looking down on us. You have been very influential in our lives; we thank you for letting us be a part of your Lives. We love you both.

It has probably been over 65 years since I last saw Charlie, but as a member of the extended family, I heard stories and followed what sounded to me to be an idyllic life, doing what you enjoy.

Charlie´s grandmother was a sister to my grandmother. We lived in Binghamton. And the stories I would hear were either through my mother or Hi and Jane (Charlie´s parents whom I would see a few times a year).

While I haven´t been back, Cooperstown was like Disneyland to me. Hi´s butcher shop was on the main drag down to the water´s edge. I don´t recall a lot of quiet moments when we gathered.

From all I know and from what I´ve read, theirs´ were lives well lived. May they rest in peace.

I first met Charlie and Barb when they visited an historic grist mill I was restoring in Howe´s Cave, NY. Charlie was enthralled by the waterwheel and inner workings of the mill. He invited me to come visit the Fly Creek Cider Mill. There I was equally enthralled by the cider press and delighted to sip on their wonderful cider. Charlie invited my dad and I to bring our portable grist mill and grind cornmeal during their Apple Festival. What fond memories! Several years ago, after enjoying dinner out with Charlie, Barb, Bill and my son, Jay, we spent the night at the Michael´s residence. Charlie made a comment as we sipped our after dinner drink, that Jay and I found extraordinarily funny. With tears in our eyes, we must of laughed for 10 minutes. I visited them at Canada Lake where I got to meet Fran for the first time.
Charlie leaves behind a legacy of hard work where he brought wonderful, happy Fly Creek Cider Mill experiences to the families that visited. Thanks for the memories Charlie.

I spoke with Mister Michaels when he spotted me wearing my Alta cap. He asked me how I liked the place and I reckon that I gushed about it like a kid at Christmas time. He laughed and told me that he skiied it a time or two. Genuinely nice man and I do not say that about many folks. May the angels be with this kind soul.

To the entire Michaels family...we have spent many wonderful days at the Fly Creek Cider Mill over the decades and really miss it and all of you since we moved to Florida in 2015. We make it a point to visit the mill when we get back north in the summer but miss enjoying your fabulous cider in the fall as we used to do. We are very sorry to learn of Charlie's passing...but what a legacy he left for all of you and all of Central New York. Rest in peace...Mike and Kay Nearing, Estero, FL.

So very sorry to learn of Charlie´s passing. He and his sweet wife, Barbara, putFly Creek , New York on the map in a big way. The Fly Creek Cider Mill became an exciting destination stop for anyone who came to the Cooperstown area including groups of school children, Dream´s Park families, holiday shoppers, annual leaf peepers and locals who loved the shopping opportunities. Charlie and Barbara were always present to greet customers , with big smiles, encouraging everyone to try their free samples including cider and delicious cheeses and pies. Charlie you will be missed but never forgotten. My sincere condolences to Barbara, Bill and the entire Michael´s family. RIP Charlie Donna Thomson
