Howard G. Nelson

Howard Gustave Nelson, 87, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025. Born in Ramsey, Minnesota, he was the cherished son of Gustave and Genevieve Nelson. His first job-cleaning cattle cars and fighting fires for the Northern Pacific Railroad-left a lasting impression and earned him the respect of his fellow workers. He often joked about preferring pig cars over watermelon ones due to the smell.

On August 8, 1970, Howard married Nancy Brown in Danville, California. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. He was a devoted father to Eric and Kevin Nelson, and a proud grandfather to Josh, Jayden, Jack, Abigail, and Max. He delighted in traveling with them, playing miniature golf, and indulging in ice cream.

Howard's 31-year career at NASA-Ames as a materials scientist focused on hydrogen embrittlement in metals-vital work for aerospace and energy systems. His research, published in numerous NASA technical reports, contributed to safety protocols and the AIAA Guide to Safety of Hydrogen and Hydrogen Systems. He was honored as Federal Scientist of the Year. When asked how he became a rocket scientist, he quipped, "You turn left," recalling a pivotal moment at Washington State University when a change in direction led him to materials science instead of civil engineering.

Beyond his professional achievements, Howard found joy in nature and community. He loved camping with Nancy and friends, tending his garden, golfing, and spending time at their Bear Valley cabin. He volunteered at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Christ Church, and treasured annual family trips to Yosemite. A year living at Penn State brought East Coast adventures, including a memorable arrival at a fancy Florida hotel with a minivan packed to the brim-much to Nancy's embarrassment.

Howard was also a master poker player, once winning $4.50 in a game he proudly remembered. He will be remembered for his deep love for family, his problem-solving mind, and his joyful, sometimes sassy spirit. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the scientific advancements he helped shape.
