It was my pleasure to be in two places where Howard made a difference. I was in Winnipeg when he was elected Premier in 1981 and had returned to my home town of Windsor by the time he and Mrs. Pawley relocated. We met at several social gatherings in Windsor and he laughed at my statement that we were the only two men in the room who had danced the Butterfly. I was fortunate to have worked for and later met socially with such a remarkable man.

I was very saddened last week to hear of Howard's death. As you well know, for about a decade from the late 70's to the late 80's, Howard was a big presence in my life. When I was first nominated in the spring of 1978, I was a complete neophyte at the game of being a political candidate. Without Howard's support and guidance, I would not have had whatever success I had as a politician. Howard's influence on me has continued long giving up the game of politics.
As many have said in the past week, Howard was a truly decent and principled human being, dedicated to the betterment of the lives of Manitobans. And, he was equally dedicated to the success of the NDP, the vehicle he, and many of us, believed to be the best to achieve that better life.
In addition to the politics, I enjoyed knowing Howard as a friend, and getting to know his family, especially during many visits to your house south of the town of Selkirk. Among the many memories I will long keep are campaign meetings, followed by a jump in your pool.
My condolences to you Adele and to Chris and Charysse and their families. I know you will all miss him terribly.

Our family feels bereft by the passing of this greatly admired Canadian. I have always admired the Hon. Howard Pawley from his MP days; he fought for Métis rights when it was unpopular and at great personal peril. Years later, when my daughter told me he was one of her U of W professors, I was in awe and anxious to meet him. He was such a warm, gracious, fabulous, selfless, brilliant, compassionate, humble human being. I am proud he allowed me to call him friend. I treasure our photograph at my daughter's Master's defence presentation and am indebted to him for mentoring her and encouraging her to pursue a law degree. Thank you, Sir, you will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

I cannot express strongly enough my deep respect for Howard Pawley. I was honored to have the opportunity to work for him in the 1980s. He was deeply principled, compassionate and inspiring. I will always be thankful for having known and learned from him.

We are currently out of the country and just heard of Howard's passing. He was a true friend and we will miss him. Adele, our thoughts are with you and your family.

Dear Adele and all Howard's family, please accept my warmest sympathies and fond memories of Howard as a colleague here at the University and as a true servant of our country and community. He was a gentle and passionate lover of social justice who embodied it on the individual level to each person he met. Such a beautiful soul. We will miss him greatly.

Adele and the entire Pawley family, my deepest condolences on the loss of a wonderful, intelligent, caring and visionary man. Howard and I enjoyed many visits to the coffee shop where any topic was fair game. I will always be grateful for Howard's knowledge and kindness. Canada lost a hero.

Almost 25 years ago, I shared an office in the Department of Political Science at the University of Windsor with Howard. I was in my first year of my first full time academic job. Howard was the visiting professor. We had a space shortage, so we were put together in an already crowded corner office that belonged to a long time faculty member who was on sabbatical. I single this out for two reasons: one, I spent a wonderful year getting to know and learn from Howard the seasoned politician; two, while we both shared an almost daily laugh about our rooming arrangements, it showed how affable and accommodating a man he was - despite his high accomplishments, he was more than happy to share space with 'a rookie'. RIP Mr Pawley. I'm sure you've found adequate space 'up there'.

It deeply saddened my husband & I to learn of Howard Pawley's passing on December 30th, 2015. Howard's integrity, public service, scholarship and generosity of spirit was an inspiration to me and others throughout the years, and it was a real honour and privilege to have been one of his former teaching assistants. Howard's presence will be sorely missed...words can not express the sorrow. Our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to his wife Adele, his family, friends and colleagues during this time of loss.

Howard's life is testimony to what public service means. As a politician, a professor and a member of the community he always had the welfare of others in mind.

I will always remember those kind blue eyes, watching intently as one spoke. Anyone who met him would surely know how genuine he was. I am proud to have supported him.

Adele: sorry for your loss.

Professor Pawley had a gift for turning history into the most engrossing stories you have ever heard. He made so many uninteresting events in Canadian history come alive. He was an excellent professor, and a very kind human. Sincere condolences to all of his loved ones.

I knew Howard when he practiced law in Stonwall Man, back in about 1966, he did some legal work for me and we met afew times over the years, It was always a pleasure to talk to him, My condolances to the family

Howard was a kind, generous, compassionate, intelligent, principled man. We want to give you our deepest condolences.

Howard leaves a large legacy, not only to you, but also to all Manitobans and Canadians for the work he dedicated his life to.

To paraphrase Stephen Levine, a grief counsellor, although grief never dies, over time it travels from the head, where it creates pain, to the heart where it recreates love; and love never dies. May you find comfort in your wonderful memories.
