Howard was born at home on a farm near Charter Oak. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, in Charter Oak. He graduated from Charter Oak High School, served in the U.S. Air Force, and after marriage made his homes in Charter Oak, Iowa; Tarkio, Missouri; and Tucson, Arizona.
Howard married Caroline Jacot on August 6, 1956, in Chandler, Arizona. They were blessed with the birth of three children. As well as owning and operating first a Mobile gas station and then a feed and seed store in Charter Oak, Howard sold agricultural products both in Crawford County and in the Tarkio, Missouri area.
Howard was an active member in his church and in community affairs before retiring to Tucson in 1980 due to poor health. He was a loving husband and father and strong believer in the strength of family and the importance of Christian education.
Howard is preceded in death by granddaughter Caroline Macdonald; his parents, Hans and Agnes Schau; and sister, Constance (Charles). Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Caroline; his children: Millie (Rich); Scott Schau (Joyce); and Susan (Michael); five grandchildren: Amy (Rob), Matthew (Stephanie), Katherine, Kristen, and Nicholas; five great-grandchildren: Samuel, Madeline and Noah, Jackson and Madeline, and extended family.
Memorial services were held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona, on March 26, 2012, and also at 1 P.M., Monday, April 16, 2012, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Timothy Frank officiated the service and graveside rites held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak. Organist Shirley Stull provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "I'm But A Stranger Here," "Amazing Grace," and "Abide With Me." Honorary Pallbearers were Matthew Lewis, Nicholas Macdonald, John-Paul Ore, Bradley Schau, Gary Schau, and Ron Schau. Military Honors were provided by Homer Hall American Legion Post 66 of Charter Oak, Iowa. The family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship and lunch provided by Staley's and the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
Cards may be sent to the family at 1955 Ashbrook Drive, Tucson, Arizona 85704. They ask that memorials be given to the National MS Society, 7611 State Line, Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64114, or to Valley Lutheran High School, 5199 North 7th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85013.
