Hugh Howie Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 27, 2017.
Captain Hugh Howie August 26, 1927 - May 8, 2017 Hugh's family is sad to announce his passing on May 8, 2017. Hugh was born in Helensburgh, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1954 with his wife Jean (predeceased 2009). They lived in Toronto, Montreal, and Saint John prior to moving to North Vancouver in 1975.

Hugh started his career at the young age of 16 joining the UK Merchant Navy and sailed throughout the Pacific and North Atlantic before settling in Canada. Hugh had a 17 year career with the Port of Vancouver and retired from his position of Terminal Manager in 1992.

Hugh will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his family. Five children Gordon (Peggy), Susan (Neil), Ian (Ines), Alan (Melissa), Jennifer (John) and his nine grandchildren - Scott, Meaghan, Kristin, Alison, Cameron, Brittany, Rebecca, Jessica and Jamie, his one great granddaughter, Rowyn and also his sister Nan (Dan) and nieces and nephews in Caithness, Scotland. He was happiest when surrounded by family at the many gatherings and thoroughly enjoyed recounting his numerous interesting stories of his travels at sea.

A "Celebration of his Life" will be held Friday June 16th 12:30PM at the Gleneagles Golf Course in West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.

My favorite memory of Hugh is when one evening at their home Jean and him were dancing. They were so happy, laughing and smiling. I worked with him for 13 years and will always remember how fun it was. The stories he told of his life and his family. He was so proud of them. My Condolences to his family as he will be missed. Rest in Peace Hugh and I hope you are dancing your jig with Jean as I type this.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of Capt. Howie. I worked for the Port at Vanterm when he was the Terminal Manager. He was always so calm, friendly and had a smile for everyone, he was very efficient and helpful and always a pleasure to talk to. Thinking of his family at this sad time with sympathy. Sharon Sims
