HUGH MCGILLIVRAY

Hugh F. "Mac" McGillivray Hugh Francis McGillivray, age 83, passed away with family by his side on March 12, 2012 at St. Joseph Hospital from complications following open-heart surgery. Mac, as he was fondly known to most, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on Nov. 9, 1928, the oldest child of Hugh Francis and Lillian Catherine (Fratus) McGillivray. He came to Washington with the Navy during World War II and made it his home, marrying Margaret Burns of Tacoma. Together they raised four sons, and marked their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2011. Mac was a member of the Operating Engineers and retired from Sunnen Crane Service after 40 years. In addition to being a Navy man he was also a member of the Seabees reserves. In retirement he and Margaret became world travelers and Mac made friends wherever they went. He was truly loved by all who were privileged to know him. His life is remembered and celebrated by many, and he will always remain in the hearts of his wife Margaret, and his children, Laurence of Yelm, Michael (Julie) of Tacoma, Patrick (Vickie) of Eugene, Oregon, and Timothy (Anikó Imre) of Claremont, California, and special daughter Donna Tarver of Steilacoom; his grandchildren, Lindy of Tacoma, Patrick (Tiffany) of Tacoma, Allison (Sam) of Champaign, Illinois, Kelly and Ian of Eugene, Rebecca, Douglas, and Colleen Johns of Steilacoom, and Fergus, Finnian and Simon of Claremont; and his great-grandchildren, Robert and Mackenzie Faulkner, and Henry of Tacoma. He is also survived by brothers John of Arizona, Edward of Massachusetts, sister Doris Merriman of Arizona, brother-in-law Robert (Betty) Burns of Lacey, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and brothers William, Raymond, Robert, Russell, and Bernard. The family wishes to thank the kind staff of St. Joseph Hospital. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Mac at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 14601 A. St., Tacoma, Monday, March 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception following in the parish hall. If you wish, donations may be made in Mac's name to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Our Lady Queen of Heaven, or to any charity of your choice.
