Hugh Michael Garvey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2024.
Hugh Michael "Mike" Garvey, 70, of Ruskin Florida, was born August 28, 1953 in Meriden, Connecticut to Hugh Robert Garvey and Elizabeth Buccy Garvey and died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Mike leaves behind his beloved wife of 43 years, Una Walthall Garvey; son Shane Michael Garvey (Kourtney), daughter Meghan Elizabeth Garvey Hanna (Wilson), granddaughters, Korie Emersyn Garvey and Parker Michayla Hanna (expected October 2024). Mike also leaves behind his sister Patricia Garvey DeOrchis, brother Gregory Garvey (Marty), several nephews, a niece and 2 great nieces along with many friends.

Mike served on the USS Bagely as a Gunner's Mate from 1971 - 1975 in the United States Navy. Thereafter, a welder by trade, Mike worked at Electric Boat before transitioning to Tampa Steel Erectors and Tampa Shipyard. He then spent 22 years with CSX Railroad before retiring in 2020.

Mike was most passionate about fishing; especially on the Little Manatee River and in his beloved Costa Rica where he created the most epic fishing stories with his children. Over the past twenty years, his sense of adventure brought him traveling to distant shores leaving indelible memories to last a lifetime. Mike left an impression on everyone that had the good fortune to know him, however, his true legacy will be found in his children and the generations to come that will carry him in their hearts and speak often about this man who touched so many people and filled their lives with laughter and love.

A private Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, September 14, 2024, 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation www.t2t.org or to a non-profit of their choosing.

As we arrive in 2025, we begin to realize that it truly is a circle of life. While it is hard at times to move forward, we all know that we must in order to honor and remember his legacy. To remember his dry wit, his laughter, his smile, and his never-ending love for all of us. Happy New Year, Michael

Henry and I had the most wonderful and adventurous vacation in Switzerland with Vic, Lisa, Una and Michael recently in May. We participated in an Italian cooking class and he was so into it enjoying every minute.

Mike was my best friend since we met in 2001. He was the most generous, polite, gracious man I have ever met. Our most fun was fishing together. What a pleasure to have known him. He will be dearly missed.

When I think of Mike, I think of how he was always helping out and was so talented doing around-the-house-projects. When Una and Mike would visit Wilson and Meghan, he would always leave his mark with something new and creative for their home.

Una and Michael played pickle ball with my husband and I. He was always very quiet but he was a good player. We will miss playing with him.
