We are so sad to hear of Hughie's passing. He was a true gentleman. We had the distinct honor of getting to know him at the IceDogs games. There were many cold winter nights where we contemplated whether we would go the game but if we knew Hughie would be there, we would gladly make the trek across the bridge. He was a kind, warm, caring soul. Our thoughts and prayers to Claire and family.

My condolences to Claire and family. Hughie was a joy to be with at many a BBQ and at Domtar staff functions. The twinkle in his eye and the engaging smile rarely changed. He will be missed.

Often during visits, with a twinkle in his eye and a laugh on his lips, Hugh would interrupt those family members doing the talking to ask, "Is this going to be a long story?"
We are so sad to know that Hugh's own story was not nearly long enough for all of us who knew and loved him.
We will miss him. Our condolences and love to Claire, Janet, Ruth, Anne and their families.

I have a very special long term memory of making apple pie with Hugh.
He's the only one I've made a pie with. And whenever I get out my crust recipe that Hugh wrote out for me or make any other crust which is patted into the plate, absolutely no bowl or rolling pin, I can remember what a joy it was to make apple pies together with someone; someone so wonderful. We really passed a good time. And it was for certain ,Hughie wanted no part of the rolling pin and bowl variety of pie crust recipes, if he was the one making the pie.
I send out my love to Claire, Ruth, Janet, Anne and all the family and friends who love Hughie. And I wish Hugh peace and love on the other side.

My first memory of Hugh was at the Strawberry festival in Niagara-on-the-lake. We got chatting, and lo and behold discovered that he and Claire lived in Thorold, as I did. Not only that but they were in the first home my husband and I had owned as a young married couple. We could never get over that. I loved meeting him at seniors. He was happy and smiley and loved a good laugh or story the world was a better place with Hugh in it. He was a great guy!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Claire and god bless you all. You were a great couple!
Sincerely, Bunny Hamilton

Sitting in Knox Church on Sunday mornings and I would look across and see Hugh. He would give a big smile and a nod of his head. After church during hockey season he would always be discussing the Leaf’s game with my Grandmother. “A gentle and kind man” describes him perfectly. Rest Easy Hugh.

I cherish so many memories of the Sutherland home, always welcoming, making everyone who entered feel like a part of the family. Mr. Sutherland was driving us everywhere, taking us out on Hallowe'en or to the Legion Christmas parties. He loved to play tricks/jokes. Always smiling and interested in life. A man of integrity and warmth who I will always think fondly of. Sending love to Claire, Janet, Ruth and Anne and families.xo
