HUGH WHITE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 19, 2021.
HUGH SAMUEL WHITE Hugh Samuel White, known to the world as Sam, died unexpectedly on January 14. He was 88 years old, and had not had an extended illness, for which we are thankful. In fact, he played tennis on the day of the stroke that ended his life. This is just how he would have wanted it. He is survived by Margaret, his loving wife of 65 years, as well as a twin brother Jim, children Ken (Lena), Ben (Toby), and Laurie (Robin), grandchildren Megan (Bryan), Stephanie (Josh), Emily (Ben), Ashley (Ryan), and Eric. He had great grandchildren Noah, Max, Leo, Bodie, and Lucy. He was very much loved by his family and all who were fortunate to know him. Sam was a prolific writer and an exceptional conversationalist and had many friends from all aspects of his life. He was one of the rare people who actually did stay in touch with people, which contributed to his belovedness. He will be sorely missed by so many. Sam loved tennis and had been an avid player throughout his life. He was very proud of his medals from the NC Senior Games and played three times a week up until his death. Sam loved the Lord and his church, Trinity United Methodist Church, and was very active in missions through Medical Ministry International, and locally through Family Promise. Sam served his country in the military, and always thought of others more than himself. There will be a drive-by visitation on Saturday, January 23, from 2:00-3:00 PM, at Trinity United Methodist Church Family Life Center on South College Road in Wilmington, NC. A private service for the family will be held on Sunday, January 24th, at the same location. For the safety of all, the family requests that well-wishers remain in their cars at both of these occasions. There will be a Celebration of Life in the future as soon as permitted. The outpouring of love and prayers from all those who knew and loved Sam has meant so much to his family. Thanks very much to all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC, at trinitynow.org, Medical Ministry International at mmi.org, or Family Promise, at familypromiselowercapefearnc.org.

Having played tennis with Sam for many years, I have many fond memories. The one memory which will remain with me is: our team was playing in the State Championship in Pinehurst, NC. Our team was going out for breakfast and my jacket zipper stuck. I asked Margaret if she could help - she referred me to Sam. I asked Sam if he would help with my zipper. With a straight face which was Sam's trademark when he was going to deliver one of his witty gems he said " it all depends on where it is"

Our deepest condolences to the entire White family. Sam was my across the hall office buddy for over 20 years. We grew to enjoy each other´s company and conversation every day. We found we had a lot in common about our lives and growing up and where we came from. A wonderful person that we will all greatly miss. Sam has crossed the bar and met his Pilot. May peace be with him and his family forever.
