Hugo Marxer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2023.
Captain Hugo Edward Marxer, USN (Ret.), of Marietta, Georgia died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 2, 2023. Born on May 22, 1933, to E. Hugo and Florence (Muelhaupt) Marxer, Hugo grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and Portland, Oregon and graduated from Portland's Washington High School in 1951 as the Valedictorian and Student Body President. A stand-out varsity athlete in basketball and baseball, he attended the University of Oregon prior to entering the United States Naval Academy in 1953.

Selected by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the father of the nuclear navy, he served on multiple nuclear submarines before becoming Commanding Officer of USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN-631) and Commanding Officer of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-34). His military decorations include three Legions of Merit and two Meritorious Service Medals.

After retiring from the Navy, Hugo joined the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), which was responsible for inspecting and advising the nation's nuclear power generating stations to raise their standard of excellence in nuclear power. After ten years at INPO, he started his own consulting company to provide mentorship and training on nuclear power operations.

In 1961, Hugo married the love of his life, Miss Jacklyn Love, Queen of the Kentucky Derby. They were united in marriage for 62 years.

"Gramps," as he was known by his nine grandsons, was the beloved patriarch of his family. He blessed them with his Roman Catholic faith, love of country, love of family, and was an unwavering model of honor and integrity. He passed on his passion for bird hunting and fly fishing to his daughters, sons-in-law, and their sons, having walked many fields, rivers, and streams with them. He was adored by his family, his friends, and the men and women with whom he served.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jacklyn, daughters (Shawn Bendig, Gerri Critikos, and Dana Marxer) and nine grandsons.

Bravo Zulu, Captain.

He was my captain during the time I served on the USS Grant as an enlisted individual. Intelligent, caring and dedicated. He is a credit to our country, and his contributions to our country will age oh so gracefully. I was blessed to serve under him. He often came to NC during retirement to enjoy life in the mountains. May he rest in peace and be remembered.

Dear Jacklyn, family and friends of Hugo,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Hugo´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Caiman SS-323, USS Andrew Jackson SSBN-619, USS Daniel Webster SSBN-626, USS Benjamin Franklin SSBN-640, and as Commanding Officer of USS Ulysses S Grant SSBN-631 and USS Canopus AS-34.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Jacklyn and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
