Hunter Shotwell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 13 to Jun. 20, 2018.
James Hunter Shotwell (4/3/91 - 6/8/18)

On June 8, 2018, James Hunter Shotwell III, a Park City local since birth, lost his battle with depression. He was 27. He is survived by his mother, Andrea Parmelee Shotwell and father, James Hunter Shotwell II; his maternal grandparents, Sylvia and Harold Parmelee; his paternal grandparents, Jean and Hugh Halsell; a multitude of loving aunts, uncles, and cousins; many adventurous and outdoor-loving friends; and his beloved girlfriend, Zoey Nelson.

Hunter had a zest for life, nature and adventure. He was an accomplished rock climber, skier, and fly fisherman. A patient teacher, he spent years as a fly fishing guide and worked in the ski industry. Hunter was extremely detailed and hardworking in all of his jobs. He was also passionate about base jumping, speed flying, and skydiving. He was a born naturalist, always connected to his environment, be it big or small. Hunter was an advocate for protecting hometown streams and Utah Open Lands. He started climbing at the age of 6, and established several climbing routes in Utah and Colorado. Above all else, Hunter was kind, gentle, and creative. His quiet passions included woodworking, fly tying, sewing sports gear, and gardening.

A service for Hunter will be held on Saturday, June 16 at 2:00 at Mountain Life Church in Park City. A celebration of his life will follow at the Shotwell family home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Utah Open Lands at www.utahopenlands.org (there will be a memorial fund set up in Hunter Shotwell's name), or to the JED Foundation to protect emotional health (www.jedfoundation.org) in Hunter Shotwell's name.

To the Shotwell and Parmelee families... I am so very sorry. It breaks my heart to think about the pain and heartache you are all feeling... and the helplessness of not being able to ease it, or find any words that can make a difference is gut wrenching. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am sending you positive energy in hopes of being able to burden some of your sadness. Much love, hugs and condolences. xoxo

Hunter was so beloved by his Colby Family, and we are devastated by his loss.
Never has a student had so many innate talents and gifts: a naturalist with musical, bodily kinisthetic, linguistic, spatial and interpersonal intelligences. He was funny, engaging, intuitive, gentle, brilliant, and so connected to the earth.
Three specifics stand out. At a young age, maybe 3rd grade, he asked that, in lieu of presents for his birthday, guests at his birthday party donate to save a natural space in southern Utah. In the 5th grade, he became fascinated with didgeridoos, saved his money for a special one he had found, and learned to play it! And by the time he was in 6th grade, he was an avid orchid enthusiast, offering tips to teachers who had wilting examples in their classrooms! Every single adult at Colby adored this wonderful boy.

We grieve with you, Andrea and Jay. Hunter will always be in our hearts and we know we were most lucky to have him in our lives.
