Huntley SCHALLER Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Mar. 12, 2015.
Huntley Schaller
1956 – 2015
Born on Long Island, New York, Huntley passed away on January 24, 2015 at age 58, three years after being diagnosed with cancer. He continued to live his life to the fullest during this time, travelling, playing tennis, skiing and teaching and doing research. He did not want to give up and give in, and was a model of optimism for all around him. During his years in Saskatchewan, he was active in the NDY and NDP, SES and Mental Health Association. At age 16, he attended Queen's University, returning to the U of S for a BA in sociology. In 1982 Huntley studied economics at McGill, earning a full scholarship at MIT, where he graduated with a Ph.D. in 1988. He moved with his wife, Shirley Nelson (married in 1984), to Carleton University and became a full professor in the Department of Economics in 2002, serving as chair from 2004 to 2007. He was a regular presenter at conferences in the US, Europe and Asia as well as serving as a visiting scholar at Princeton, Harvard and Vienna. Huntley is survived by his common-law spouse, Lahouaria Yssaad; mother, Joanne Schaller; sister, Susan Letwin, one niece and two nephews; and his former wife, Shirley Nelson; and was predeceased by his father, John Schaller (2014) and his grandmother Dorothy Roy (2004).

Huntley, you were such an amazing friend. i still remember the Archeological Museum in Madrid, tones of letters and thrilling discussions on Neuroeconomics. I was shocked to find out this tragic news. I was enjoying being your friend.

I knew Huntley in the 80's when he and I lived in Boston. He was always intellectually splendid, with a sharp wit and we had many parties together, saw plays, and enjoyed each other's company. Huntley was one of the most brilliant men I've ever known. He lived a full life, and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

We were children together. Came upon this by accident. I cannot tell you how this has darkened my day. Love and light to Susan and Joanne.

A lifelong friend and collaborator and colleague in many shared causes and ideas gone far too soon. Heartfelt sympathy to Lahouria, Huntley's family and his many friends.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Huntley's untimely passing. Huntley and I were good friends at Queen's University '73-74. We shared many memorable times. We reconnected some yrs ago and I am the richer for it. I am grateful to have known such an amazing, passionate and kind man.
RIP old friend.

So many great memories of our young NDP activities in Saskatoon and elsewhere. Huntley always kept in touch and we had a wonderful dinner a few years ago when he was here lecturing at the U of A. I was fortunate to know him. Chris

Condolences to Huntley's family. There was so much more for Huntley to contribute that has now been cut short. I have memories pre 1975. Huntley as the Director of Sask. Human Rights Association, Huntley as a principled member of the NDY, Huntley canvassing for Anne Boulton when she ran for a NDP seat in Saskatoon in International Women's Year, Huntley & Shirley getting married in Weyburn, Huntley in Ottawa as a prof at Carleton U. Always a friend. An admirable life.
