Hydeia is my Shero! I am 73 years old but I remember seeing her thru the years as she bravely and clearly expressed her feelings about AIDS and HIV. She was amazing and she will be in my heart forever. Gone too soon...

My name is Kharyzma Raphael and I'm from NYC. I learned about Hydeia when I saw her on the Oprah Winfrey Show years ago. Since then, I followed her story and read the book her and her mom Patricia wrote "You Get Past The Tears". I wrote a paper in college about HIV/Aids and included her story in it. In 2009, I contacted Hydeia through social media and we started following each other. I wanted her to come speak at my college at the time, however, my school didn't have the funds to fly her out. We still kept in touch. I'd often check in with her through email and social media. In 2014, she told me she'd be speaking at an event in NYC. I think it was called "Arise" and rapper Doug E. Fresh was there. Hydeia and I finally met in person. We talked and took pictures. I remember Hydeia looked so nice in her outfit. We both liked beauty and fashion, so we had that in common. We continued to stay in touch on and off. More recently a little after 2020, Hydeia reached out to me to collaborate with me on my cosmetics line Kharyzma4u. I was going to create lipgloss for her. Unfortunately, Hydeia wasn't able to follow through due to other pending collaborations that she had going on at the time. We still kept in touch via phone, social media, and video calls. We always wished each other Happy Birthday and supported each other's accomplishments through social media. Because we lived in different states, we often said whenever we would be in each other's city, we'd hang out. I regret that due to our busy schedules, we didn't get a chance to meet up again.

I heard of Hydeia's passing through an IG notification early Wednesday morning on Feb. 21st. I was on my way out. I wasn't sure if what I was reading was true. It wasn't until I got back home that I was able to confirm that she had passed. I was deeply saddened.

The times that Hydeia and I spoke on the phone, she had been going through depression and was trying to push through. Then shortly after I didn't hear from her or see updates on her social media. I noticed that she was still following my stories on IG from another IG account that she created. She had stopped posting on her main IG account. She was always inspired by my fashion and dance posts. I was always inspired by all of the wonderful activist work that she did for HIV/Aids. I also loved her fashion and style.

I will always remember Hydeia's smile, her brave and bold spirit, her humor and her awesome fashion sense! I will miss her. I send my condolences to her family and closest friends and everyone who loved her. Hydeia was and will always be a bright light in this world.

So sorry to hear this, my daughter's middle name is Hydeia which I gave her after seeing Hydeia on Oprah and the impact she made on me while I was pregnant. Her words and straight up honesty (out of the mouths of babes) I could not get out of my mind. Sending deepest sympathy to her family , she was definitely a diamond in the rough.

Such a beautiful bright shining light. She was so dedicated to a cause that affected so many, including herself. So very sorry. My condolences to the Broadbent family. May God be with you all to comfort you at such a very difficult time.
