On air, Hyle was reliably old school but what a dynamic reporter downtown. Nothing got in his way. I worked for WWYN/WLKK radio in the 70s and saw him on the beat most every day. Endless admiration for Daddy-o. Also a very, very nice man.

To Hyle's family:

Very sorry to read of Hyle's passing. He was first a competitor, then a mentor, then a dear friend. I always enjoyed covering stories with Hyle, and was amazed at his note-keeping on any scrap of paper available. Unlike today's news readers, Hyle covered county government and the court system, as well as city hall, then returned to the station to write his stories and deliver them over the air as anchor of the 7 p.m. news. I'm not sure what happened to that faded, beat-up old VW he had for years, but I always suspected it became a planter at city hall or the courthouse. Hyle was truly one of a kind, and perhaps the most unpretentious person I've ever known -- despite his professional successes, not an egotistical bone in his body. Cal was the love of his life, and his family always came first.

I was very sorry to learn of Hyle's death. I knew him throughout much of my career as a prosecutor and judge. He was a good man, honest and a consummate professional. You have my prayers and sincere condolences as you mourn his passing.

To Hyle's family: I worked at WICU-TV in the late 60's and always had great regard for Hyle. He was a super nice guy and always nice to everyone. He was a very good newsman and an innovator in TV news gathering. So sorry to hear of his passing. He was very important in those early days of local news coverage.

I'm very sorry for the family's loss. He was a really nice man and a great neighbor.

I will always have fond memories of Hyle as a top newsman.

A local legend! When I was quite young, Mr. Richmond and his family moved in down the the street from us in the Lake Cliff area of Lawrence Park, and we were all so excited that a celebrity was living on our street. But he was just a quiet, affable guy. Condolences to the family.

So sorry for your loss. He was always interested in any sport his kids were involved with in high school. He used to watch us play basketball at Napier Park. A very nice man.

I remember watching Hyle on the Erie news.
