Mildred and Jay have been in my life since I was six. Their unwavering faith in my father’s architecture led to the deepest of friendships over 50 years, as offices and houses were designed, kids grew up and had kids, and we all grew older.

My “Millie” and “Poppa Bear,” were wonderful to me. I saw in them, two unique individuals with one heart of steadfast love, wisdom and courage, day to day, in their own family, circle of friends, and professionally, and later, in the face of Terry‘s loss, health matters, and the wreck of Katrina.

We shared lunches, dinners, conversations, gatherings, letters, phone calls, and always, the jewel that was Bellaire Drive. They gave me support whether I was near or far; perspectives that were positive, sound, caring. After my own father was gone, Jay guided me legally, and as a father would.

Together, they were a couple, young in spirit, invincible, filled with a zest for life and learning. When I was little, I saw Jay as a big, stern man, hence the name, “Poppa Bear.” As I matured, I discovered what a gentle soul he could be, and the name stayed as a symbol of love between us.

When I think of the closeness we shared, and feel protected and grateful, I know there will be only one Poppa Bear for me, and never another like him.

With love from each of us to each of you, especially my Millie ...

In the late 1950's, Jay Krieger hired a needy Tulane Law student to do afternoon research. Five days a week I went to Mr. Krieger's office in a building on Perdido St. that was also inhabited by lawyers Dobbin Friedman and Irving Novick. My education in real estate and credit transaction law was developed at Mr. Krieger's knee. But I learned a lot more that just the practical aspects of the law of finance. Mr. Krieger would never ever bend a rule or adjust a document. Promisorry notes were always completed before the debtors signed them. Notary work was never performed without the presence of the witnesses and the affiant. Borrowers and lenders alike were exposed to a complete explanation of the contents of each and every document. There was only one way to practice law and that was the right way, to wit: the Krieger way. Over the years that followed, I kept in touch with lawyers Angie and Jay. Occasionally, we would exchange a piece of correspondence. Jay was a patient professional. He was admired and revered by all who knew him.
