Ida "Ruth" Briggs transitioned this life in peace on July 8, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. The youngest of eight children, she was born May 21, 1945 in Bethel, NC and was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.

A resident of Durham since 1963, Ruth was the devoted wife of 55 years to her husband John, and loving mother to three children Sondra Wright, Jon "Pernell" Briggs and Angela Briggs. Most of all, she was the proud "grammy" to her only grandchild, Barrington Ruth Briggs. Ruth is further survived by a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom she expressed tremendous love and pride for. She also leaves behind numerous friends who knew they could count on her tough love and frank honesty.

In addition to being a world class cook, Ruth will be fondly remembered as an avid gardener, outspoken humorist and selfless caregiver who always put the needs of others before her own. She was a tireless encourager who always inspired young people to excel and achieve their best.

Services celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, July12, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at Mt Vernon Baptist Church, 1007 S. Roxboro St. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 11:30 – 12:00 pm at the church, just before the service. Burial will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. Family and friends will gather in their favorite shade of purple, in honor of her memory.
