Ilana (Lani) Wilensik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2025.
Ilana ("Lani") Krop Wilensik, 66, beloved wife and sister, passed away on December 6, 2024, at her home in Gold Canyon, Arizona. Lani was born in Buffalo, NY, on June 8, 1958, to her loving parents Lou and Mimi Krop. She was a loving daughter and sister, friend to many, tireless volunteer, successful DJ, talented musician, accomplished artist, writer, editor, and lover of animals, especially her beloved pets.

In addition to her husband Robert Wilensik, Lani is survived by her three sisters, Lisa Pantel (Mendham, NJ), Lori Stein (Cheviot Hills, CA), and Marci Cook (Vienna, VA); her three brothers-in-law, Glenn, Ted and Mark; and her niece and nephews, Libby, Adam and Eli. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lani's early life was centered around classical music. An accomplished pianist and violinist, she attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York city, as well as Indiana University's School of Music in Bloomington, IN. She expanded her musical horizons at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, where, armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, she launched a successful career in radio.

Using the radio personality name Lani Daniels, she became a popular DJ, first at WWSW Oldies Radio in Pittsburgh, and then later at WXTU Country Radio in Philadelphia, PA. She also undertook freelance work during this time, creating and co-hosting nationally syndicated radio shows and appearing in various radio and television commercials. It was while working in radio that Lani met her husband Bob, a native of New York, NY.

After leaving radio, Lani served as Executive Director of the Philadelphia office of the American Jewish Committee, an organization dedicated to the protection and education of Jews worldwide. She then became Executive Director of the Barn at Spring Brook Farm in Westchester, PA, an organization providing animal-assisted activities for disabled children. It was here at Spring Brook that Lani, with her big heart, was able to combine her lifelong love of animals with her passion for caring for others.

After retiring, Lani and her husband Bob moved to Gold Canyon in the Phoenix, AZ, area, where together they undertook numerous road trips and enjoyed the desert landscape. Lani continued her long history of volunteering, with special emphasis on caring for and raising at their home rescued cats and dogs. She also launched several small businesses, including a candy company known as Blabbys and a creative arts business called Artworks on Easy Street. She was extremely creative in many media, including resin, sublimation, and needlework. Her talents extended to the written word, where she wrote poetry and spent many years as an editor.

Lani succumbed to cancer following a brief illness. She was brilliant and wise, passionate and strong, creative and funny, and an eternal optimist. She had boundless compassion for others, especially her beloved parents, her three sisters, and her husband. Every person whose life she touched has been enriched by having known her. She is deeply missed by her family and friends; their memories of her will never fade.

I just learned that Ilana passed. This is heartbreaking news. I came to know Ilana through the American Jewish Committee, where she was a dynamo. She and I had many conversations about my special needs son, and her love and compassion were transcendent. May her memory continue to be a blessing to those who knew her, and may her family be comforted with the mourners of Zion.

Bob, I just learned of Lani´s passing, and I was so very sorry to hear the news. Though I never had the chance to meet her, I remember how devoted you were during the time of your move and how often you spoke of her with such affection. Wishing you comfort and healing in the months ahead.

I remember the years of growing up in the Green Acres area of Tonawanda, NY and seeing Lani walking to school, like the rest of us kids. That curly haired, short kid with a big smile could move those legs as she was eager to get to her classroom at Green Acres Elementary School. As a 5th grader, I recall she always had added to her arms not only books but also a musical instrument. She was noted as a smart kid, talented in music, and full of positive vibe. She enjoyed life. I think everyone liked Lani because of her joyful persona! To her family, and friends... I send my deepest condolences. This world is now one less of the light she beamed from her happiness of being in it. Gods blessings and grace be with her and with the family and friends she left behind.

In the 1960´s as a child I was a guest many afternoons in the beautiful home of the sweet, smart, lovely Krop family. The girls ages mirrored the ages of 3 of us 4 Bolinsky children. We attended public schools together.
I am so sorry to hear about Lani´s illness. My sincerest sympathies to her beloved husband and loving sisters. We will all meet in the World to Come.

I attended the same high school as Llani. It was there we shared a common bond of our Jewish faith and love of music. She was a dear friend and we re-connected via facebook years later. I´m so glad that we found each other on facebook and that the short time we shared was as meaningful as I´m sure it was for her too.

My condolences go out to her husband and her family. She will surely be missed. May her memory be a blessing to all that knew her.

As a curly haired, bright, bubbly little girl, Lani came into my second grade class at Green Acres School. How honored I was to be included in the celebration of her Bat Mitzvah seven years later. I was so proud of her as she sang her portion of the Torah, I cried. Although we lost track over the years, I always wondered what she did with her life. WOW! Everything good, joyful and giving.! What a blessing Lani was to me and everyone around her. Rest in peace my beautiful, bubbly little girl. May your memory be for a blessing. Mrs. Judy Sullivan Johnson

I am shocked by the passing of my childhood friend, Lani. I knew her from school and admired her musical proficiency in school orchestra. She was so talented! Her father was my family optometrist. What a rich life - she will be greatly missed. May memories of her be a comfort to family and friends.

My very deepest sympathies to the Krop family on the untimely loss of Lani. The Krop family were our neighbors on Lynbrook Ave in Tonawanda,NY, and they were the best neighboring family one could ask for. Lani was always full of fun and rarely seen without a smile on her face. She was just a great person to be around. May she rest in peace. Kevin Borth and Family
